• When we got Omar we thought we were going to get a female but the breeder advised us as first time Saluki owners a male would be easier as they are generally more straightforward their prey drive is worse but once you've got your head round that that's usually it and the females are more aloof, flighty and you've got hormonal seasons to deal with. With most dogs it is often a case of the bigger the soppier i was just making a physicality perspective. Omar is only 25kg and if he sees a cat and pulls i can control him but my wife struggles. He also likes laying on us rather than just next to us matter how much room he has which is lovely but I'm not sure I'd like it as much if he was 15kg heavier.

  • A local to me has a saluki/whippet and she's the best, perfect recall, plays nicely with dogs of all sizes, just wants to run big circles at 100mph then lie down. Also amazingly soft fur.

Thats exactly what our friend with a greyhound/saluki cross was hoping for....and ended up with a total certifiable lunatic šŸ˜‚

  • I met a really nice Springer Saniel the other day, played so nicely with my small one, so well behaved. The person walking it told me she is a foster so she only had her a couple of weeks. She'd sleep all day at home then play nicely in the park, never wander off to too far, basically just being the perfect dog. I know it's a one off though, no chance you could get another Springer and expect it to behave the same, I don't think I'd have the time or energy to keep one properly.

  • If you want to go full golf club Garmin do some for about Ā£800 but the dog trace is the same for a little more than half that. The Tractive does cost a bit in the long term whereas the dog trace and garmin have no subscription and communicate with their own hand held device. The problem for us with the Tractive was if you use live tracking it drains your phone battery pretty quickly and 10 second updates use less but if running through to woods 10s could be quite far away. The separate hand help ones last about 3 days so it depends how long your out for.

  • I had a play with a Garmin tracker this summer. Volunteered to help with a search and rescue exercise in Austria and some of the dogs were rigged up for Garmin. Was pretty cool to dot watch them on a Garmin GPSMap! I think you can track them on a Fenix/Epix too although not certain.

  • I'd have thought the Garmin is better supported across different devices and if my Garmin watch was compatible I'd have probably spent the extra. As mine is it has a 12 mile range accurate to around 10 metres and can track up to 10 receivers

  • can track up to 10 retreivers

    fixed!

  • Ha yeah Retrievers works. I meant 10 transmitters the receiver is my hand held bit šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

  • Damn sticksā€¦ happened after a holiday with the parents.
    Massive repeated abscess.
Second surgery and likely a third to remove the capsule as there was some adherence to tissue at operation.
Have to keep her on trazadone so that she stays vaguely chilled and shit walks for a fortnight.

  • Our viszlas are a vets retirement fund, I assume the only creatures that make a vet even richer are horses. All the enthusiasm but so much stupid.

    Hoping for a quick recovery.

  • What are people's honest thoughts on having a medium sized dog in a flat? I probably won't be living in a house for 2-3 years.

85sqm, first floor, opposite a 200 acre park. Obviously it is not ideal as it can't chill in my non existent garden when I am at home working for example.

I would love a staffy. Ideally would rescue one that is 1-2 years old. All the rescue centres I have looked at online mandate you need a garden for any dog. So I'd have to get one from Pets for Homes

  • Was fine for us with our 23kg alsation/lurcher cross. We made sure she got loads of stimulation, walks and play and honestly didn't miss the extra space or private garden. The one downside would be having to harness/lead up for a wander outside for the night time wee, instead of just opening the backdoor.

  • We got a staffy puppy a few months ago and we're in a first floor flat. We do have a garden but it's down quite steep steps. Overall it's not really been a problem. It has been a big help that she's recently worked out how to go down the stairs on her own and we can just let her go to the toilet herself. But prior to that I was having to carry her down the stairs every time and the carrying part was the only annoying aspect.
But it wouldn't be the end of the world if you don't mind taking them outside every few hours.
She expends most of her energy going out for a couple of walks/play sessions a day & then mostly sleeps/relaxes the rest of the time.
We do a bit of playing in the flat- throwing soft toys, etc. But she's pretty happy just sitting on someone's knee and gently wrestling with a toy.
I presume in the summer we'll probably make more use of the garden with her & expect she'll need longer walks once she gets a bit bigger. But basically I wouldn't rule it out on account of being in a flat.
It is a shame rescue centres won't even consider it. I feel like a lot of rescue dogs would be much happier in a place with no garden than they'd be staying in the rescue centre. Living in Brixton/Clapham I've met lots of people with dogs in flats with no gardens who seem perfectly happy/well adjusted.
I can definitely say that I don't regret getting a staffy at all. They're amazing dogs and she's (so far) been much easier than I expected.
Obviously tend to be quite a lot of staffies of that sort of age needing re-homing on pets at home (freeads is good too). Though reading between the lines some of them sound like they might be quite hard going. I'm glad having got a dog I no longer have to keep reading all the bleak ads about how 'Tyson's a great dog but doesn't get on with my cat/has more energy than I can cope with/doesn't fit with my work schedule'.

  • Nice one! Any pics?

Last point is so important that you don't get one that's not been well trained or looked after

  • nice work! I don't think I'll be in this flat for that long anyway relative to a 15 year innings of a dog

  • Literally compiling up to date photos now...
(am meant to be working but this is more fun).

The first lfgss pictures of her are here:

I would guess if you're looking to re-home one privately then several advance visits + seeing how they are out and about with other dogs would be really important. I've put a lot of work into getting Ada to socialise with as many dogs as possible over last few months and hopefully it's paid off.

  • many dog pictures...
(my partner & children hate posing for photos so getting a dog has provided me with the enthusiastic subject I needed)

  • The third one here ! Brilliant

  • Yes, he was great. 60kg and not fully grown... They played together really nicely despite how the photo looks.

  • Nice dog.
    Nice malanois too!

  • Lovely photos

  • Yes, she's an amazing dog. Incredibly well trained and just squashes Ada under one paw when she gets too annoying. She stayed with her for a weekend when she was about 10 weeks old which I think got her started on the path to being well socialised.
(so far anyway - I realise everything can change when they hit the teenage phase, but at the moment she seems to be very good at befriending other dogs/working out which dogs want to be left alone).

  • I think if they're good from young it'll stay, unless a bad incident happens. And then you end up like the vizla!

    Great photos
