You could split it open and extract the individual cells. It probably wont explode much.

Supermarket battery bins are literal bins, if you can pick it up it will fit

DIY places also usually take old batteries, small electricals and lightbulbs including florescent tubes. Our B&Q does, at least.

Cheers. Looks like my local Tesco, Sainsbury's and Poundland all take batteries. Need to check them out for which I can fit a Dyson battery pack in though.
