My Croix de Fer was a 56 for this same reason. Managed to just about make it fit when I'd normally ride a 58 too.
I sold my old 56 because I didn't like the aesthetic it had... 54.5 top tube meant 120mm stem and lay back post.
Just didn't suit well....
