If you want to go full golf club Garmin do some for about £800 but the dog trace is the same for a little more than half that. The Tractive does cost a bit in the long term whereas the dog trace and garmin have no subscription and communicate with their own hand held device. The problem for us with the Tractive was if you use live tracking it drains your phone battery pretty quickly and 10 second updates use less but if running through to woods 10s could be quite far away. The separate hand help ones last about 3 days so it depends how long your out for.
I had a play with a Garmin tracker this summer. Volunteered to help with a search and rescue exercise in Austria and some of the dogs were rigged up for Garmin. Was pretty cool to dot watch them on a Garmin GPSMap! I think you can track them on a Fenix/Epix too although not certain.
I'd have thought the Garmin is better supported across different devices and if my Garmin watch was compatible I'd have probably spent the extra. As mine is it has a 12 mile range accurate to around 10 metres and can track up to 10 receivers
