This really depends on if you want to do routing, I assume you’ll create routes since the screen size on either the 830 or 1030 is not really big enough or easy enough to use to be able to use it for map browsing.
Personally I’ve used the 830 really successfully for up to 200k rides using routing. The routing is easy to see with useful countdown to junction indicators. The integration with Strada routing is pretty good, I have no experience of other routing applications. -

You could get a bar mount for your phone so you don't need to "stop and check it".

The on/off button on my 3+ year old Fenix 5 Plus has become entirely unresponsive.
Props to Garmin support though - They're replacing it with not questions asked (with a refurb) .

I have an 830 and two speed sensors.
Can I connect them both to the same Garmin or can I only connect one?
-
• #5032
You mean connect to one speed sensor at a time, on two different bikes?
I believe so but have not yet tested. -
• #5033
Yes, you can. You can't connect to two active speed sensors at the same time, obvs.
-
• #5034
Yeah that's fine mate, they all get listed as separate sensors and you can change the name to make sure you're connected to the correct one. I swap between different sensors on different bikes daily.

brilliant, thanks both.
-
• #5036
Yeah, one at a time on two different bikes.
That seems to have worked.
61258 is the sensor I have been using and 1025440 is the one I just added after putting in a new battery.

Me again (I really should learn how to use this thing properly).
Why doesn't my (the) %HRR field populate?

Have you set a max and resting HR under My Stats > Training Zones > HR Zones?
-
• #5039
I had set max but not resting. That has fixed it now, thank you

Obliquely on-topic: I have a Garmin Edge and an outfront mount. If I wanted to get a case to fit my iPhone to the mount, what is recommended?
- A full case with integrated Garmin fixing
- Garmin fixing with self-adhesive backing for my current case
The 3D printed offerings I’ve seen are careful to claim they’re only for indoor turbo use. Which is not how I want to use this…
Thanks!

Dunno about iphone but I used what appeared to be a good quality stick-on one for an existing case for my Samsung.

That’s just the recommendation I needed, thanks!

Me: Hi Garmin, the strap on my partner's vivosport has snapped.
Garmin: Sorry, you can't get new straps - it's an all-in-one device.
Me: Oh, that's disappointing.
Garmin: I know. Anyway, we'll send you a new one. -

This is is similar to my experience when the strap on my vivosmart 4 broke.
Garmin might be overpriced and sometimes a little bit shonky but I'm a big fan of their regular software updates (even on older models) and pretty decent approach to repairs and replacements.

Their service is good.
Their soterware (on the older models), not so much - I remember reading an article by a person that had looked at it all in a hex editor, and seen what a big ball of mud it really was.

Very similar to my experience with Fitbit "Charge HR" and it's ballooning straps... Replaced 3 times or so with brand new devices, before the warranty was over.

Was there an update that changed the colours on 1030 Plus recently?
I've checked and can't see that I've changed any view settings related to colour but it seems lines on the fields on the map screen that were previously black are now blue and the colours look a lot more like my older 1030 compared to the brighter 1030 Plus.
Or has the screen just shit it?
Thanks for this reply, it saved me a lot of money. Ride with GPS did exactly what I wanted and I only got lost once (GPS seemed to completely freeze, but a restart seemed to resolve things). The route planning was very easy to use, and the ability to download these routes was great.
One thing to note is that I need to pay more attention to surfaces when building routes. Rocky farm tracks are quite a challenge on skinny road tyres...Time to buy a gravel bike, clearly.
