  • The only thing that will kill Tesla right now is resale value.

For some reason, they stay very high compared to other brands. This means that lease and PCP monthly payments are better than rivals or even some cheaper cars (Kia / Hyundai etc).

If their residual value falls, they will start seeing people walk away in favour of other brands with better build quality or legacy luxury brands if they sort their shit out.

Still, there is nothing the size of a Model Y with the actual space a Model Y has. Legacy manufacturers are still obsessed with traditional packaging, supply chain diversification and design so they continue to have sub-par range and interior space.

  • Space in the Y is taller, squarer and has a massive under floor bin (enough for a solid carryon suitcase) and a larger frunk.

Interior passenger space is also larger in the front and back.

  • People very definitely don’t buy cars for the cabin space to footprint on the road ratio. The A class should have change the way cars were built in that regard but people didn’t buy it, they stuck to conventional looking hatches with less room. See also A2, i3, Berlingo.

The USPs for Tesla were electric power, charge network and range. They’re still ahead on range but the other two are gone. People will now weigh up range vs image, build quality, price, customer service, reliability etc.

And then there’s styling. They’re dated. The language of the range is 10 years old now. That’s too old, people want cars that look like they’re new, not like they might be 10 years old.

  • Having been a passenger in an i5 a couple of times I thought the interior passenger space was huge! Low speed ride is awful though, which begs the question of just how bad the Y is.

  • I’d have an Ioniq 5 over a Model Y for style, but I can get a Model Y in 4 weeks, and an Ioniq 5 I’d need to wait 12+ months right now.

Tesla have a big advantage currently with being actually able to supply cars.

  • Cos no one wants them innit.

  • Mainly trollolz but supply of new Teslas is currently higher than demand, hence ~20% price drops.

  • Just had a look at updated lease prices, seems that the RWD model Y is now about £100-130 a month cheaper than an equivalent Kia EV6 and Ioniq 5 (single motor variants) and fairly readily available.

  • See my post earlier. This is a massive monthly difference that will sway a lot of people.

If residuals for Tesla crash, sales will follow.

  • I expect they will all sell quick, as most other EV deliveries estimates seem to be slipping.
Also I’ve been told that there is a new model revision due, so price drop is partly because of this maybe.

  • Surely no one is actually buying these cars with their own money. To me they only make sense as company cars on BIK.

  • When I was looking in May 22, Ioniq 5 and EV6 prices were considerably cheaper than Tesla, though that was before the cheaper RWD model.
Both the Ioniq 5 and EV6 has seen several big jumps in lease prices, maybe due to less optimistic estimates of residual values?

  • People are mad, remember. Average spend on a car on finance is 19% of take home income. So it’s perfectly normal to spend £1000 a month on a car if you’re earning £80k. Mad, but normal.

  • But…. but… 80k…. Normal? Mad.

  • I'd love to earn 80k.

    I wouldn't rent a car for £1000 a month either.

  • Work harder

    Edit to add. and smarter

  • Buy more

    Be happy

  • I looked at an Ioniq 5 in March before I shopped in my Model 3 for a Model Y

Base model I5 was cheaper but comparatively specc’d models (range, tech etc) were around £150-200 more a month than the Tesla over 4 years.

  • a larger frunk.

Dead to me. Blocked and reported.

  • This is insane to me. But perhaps explains the cars of neighbours round our way a bit more.

  • Frunk sounds stupid but is the totally accepted word to describe the front luggage compartment by motoring journos, isn't it?

  • Dead to me. Blocked and reported

  • Froot is worse. Don’t @ me.
