I've always seen a lot of negativity towards Gravel Kings on here.
What's the issue with them?
-
• #9553
They are shit.
-
• #9554
They get cuts and punctures unless you ride them on a specific day of the week

I rode GK SK+ for Badlands and had zero issues. They're gonna go on my partner's bike when she kills her current tyres. But I think a lot of the whinging is about GK Slicks rather than the heavier duty version I used.

Nah they are all shit in the UK where we have flints and rain that lubricates them. Been on too many rides where the only punctures are GKs of all flavours.
-
• #9558
Good point. I never rode mine in the UK.

• #9559
I blame brexit.
-
• #9560
I only ride on Tuesdays.
Will I be ok?

I've used the SK for a while and yet to get a puncture.
But tbf, that's almost entirely outside of the UK and in nice weather. Although they did 2 horrendous wet mixed surface December trips over the Chilterns and Peak District and survived.

Ive taken a punt on some Vittoria Terreno Zero 650x47 from Olsen Bikes. https://olsenbikes.co.uk/products/vittoria-terreno-zero-folding-tyre-650-x-47?variant=41515290886282
The website is terrible and almost didn't order because it looked like it could be a scam but I think it's legit and I couldn't resist at £45 for a pair inc delivery.

You might be aware anyway but the reason they are cheap is because they are the non-tubeless versions and only have the 2c compound rather than the Graphene 2.0 triple compound of the posher ones.

crap, no I didn't realise that. Thanks for the heads up, have emailed to try and cancel the order.
edit: that was quick, order cancelled already and refunded. phew!

Fourth puncture already just on the front today.. got them mid-October. Come next paycheck I'm switching to something else. Debating between the Urban Contact, Cinturato Velo, and Vittoria Terreno judging by the replies I've got and seen around here.
Not sure if tube or tubeless for London, LBSs I've fixed flats at all said don't go tubeless, wondering why..
Fell for the GK hype.. it is what it is, I guess.

Bit left field, but hoping someone might have some experience... I've signed up to Battle on the beach this year, and doing it on a rigid hardtail. The race is half Dutchie style beach race, half blue-level singletrack in the woods.
Has anyone got any tyre reccomendations? So far I have:
Schwalbe G -One's
Schwalbe Thunder burts (maybe G one on the back and Thunderburt up front?)
Continental Speedking (if I can find them) -

Could be a bunch of reasons, they can't sell you inner tubes, they can't fix it quickly (I've seen LBS turn cyclists away as they would not fix tubeless punctures). The logic would suggest tubeless for commuting makes a lot of sense, provided you don't have skinny tyres that need silly pressures

Having to fix unsealable flats on my commute has been a monumental pain several times but I've had countless times when I've arrived at work and noticed a new puncture that I hadn't even realised happened and that would have been a lot more times changing tubes in the rain that I avoided.
-
• #9569
With that said, I'm going to go for Durano Plus with tubes on my new commuter because they're the toughest non-slow tyre I've found so far
-
• #9570
I've always wondered if this is as true as we think though - would every small hole that gets through an outer tyre necessarily pierce the inner tube, or would the tube sometimes deflect + not puncture?
-
• #9571
It wouldn't be easy to test but ignorance is bliss and I'm sticking with it
-
• #9572
I'm completely sold on tubeless for commuting. I had a puncture in the torrential rain yesterday, lost a bit of pressure but it sealed and I wasn't late for work. Topped up the air before leaving at the end of the day and its as good as new. Dreamy

My mum has a hybrid type bike with mtb tyres. She wants to start riding on the road with a local ladies group (max 15 miles/social ride) and is worried about getting punctures.
I was thinking to put Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres on her bike. Does that sound like a good idea?

As a counterpoint, with some n=1 anecdotal evidence, I’ve commuted for almost 4 years on Gravelking slicks, regularly riding over glass in the cycle lanes, as well as some longer winter road riding in the countryside and light bridleway riding in the summer. I’ve had 3 punctures. One sealed on its own and I plugged the other two with no issues. Eventually replaced the rear because the tread wore out, but it wasn’t excessively cut up when I removed it.

Totally the opposite. I had them for like 2 years, mostly commutes and winter road rides / light gravel. Not my only bike or wheels so I don't think I got a lot of miles from these. Many punctures, rear looked shredded, leaked for a million holes everytime I put new sealant. Shame because the tires rolled good.
Where would you buy em? They seem to be sold out everywhere pretty much
