  • I still do this a lot to avoid adverts
    https://www.lfgss.com/comments/16622602/

  • Just install AdBlock on chrome

  • I'm mostly watching on a PS4, no way to avoid but mute them and have a game open on my phone. I refuse to watch most of them, some of the targeted ones do interest me but it's rare. Mostly getting gambling ones atm 😒

  • “This new product from...blah, blah, blah... is taking the world by storm”

    No, it’s not.

YouTube seems to have an algorithm that pushes the same ad at you over and over again rather than a different one each time. Can’t be the best marketing strategy if it just makes you hate the product.

  • Then you get into the video and they immediately plug their sponsor for 5 minutes

  • I think, at least from my experience, youtube has started to do a thing as well now where it will play an ad at the most popular part of a video or if there's a timestamp someone has pointed out in the comments that I suspect is clicked a lot.

All this means that either an interesting/funny part of a video is ruined because just as the the thing is about to happen after the build up, there's an advert that cuts in. Or if it's something with a load of fluff at the start of the video you end up getting an ad at the start, scrubbing to the bit of the video that is actually of use, and an ad usually pops straight back up again.

  • We have been here before ...

    When I'm watchin' my TV
And a man comes on and tells me
How white my shirts can be
But, he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke
The same cigarettes as me ...

    Appeared in 1965 I think.

  • watching on a PS4, no way to avoid

    PiHole might work

  • Ooh, definitely trying that!
    Thanks

  • as someone who went through the entire pihole setup only to immediately replace it with nextdns.io pretty much the same day I'd recommend taking a look at that first.

  • Interesting. Are you on the free setup?

  • scratch that it doesnt block yt ads (but is very good for other blocking purposes).

  • I've looked into blocking them with PiHole but it's either not easy or not possible. Very appreciative of AdBlock for the desktop but no joy with phone/tablet/TV. Also not a fan of the 3rd party youtube apps I've tried.

I've never seen any of these shitty ads people are mentioning tho'. All mine are legit broadcast-style commercials, usually just cut down to 15 seconds or a minimum time before they can be skipped. Do get the repetition, which is very annoying and counterproductive.

  • Yes, that is an incredibly annoying function. Also if you want to skip forward through a video it seems to need to show you an ad every time you skip past where the ad would have been. Not to mention the sheer frequency of adverts in some videos. GCN videos are becoming borderline unwatchable.

I read somewhere (on here?) from someone working in product development (for laundry detergent or some such) that the whole process of releasing "new and improved" versions of a product was really just about seeing how much of the active ingredient they could remove before the product became unusable (or obviously terrible value for money). YouTube currently has that vibe, they just seem to want to fit as many adverts of as great a length of possible into every video and will only stop when people actually start jumping ship en masse.

  • Youtube ads are pretty much the only regularly annoying thing I've not managed to block yet. Pi Hole user.

The Google pixel ads are very annoying.

  • no joy with phone/tablet/TV

    Try 1blocker

  • Ah ok, oh well, I've wanted to mess around with a Pi for a while now anyways.

Edit. Sounds like I have no options for YT. Back to mute and tapping on my idle game for 15 seconds

  • We love him(b) again now.

(Yes I know thats not optimal cable outlet placement but better than before)

  • Good job. Don’t be a Henry hater!! Mine is 22years old and still working away. 😀

  • Google search. I swear it used to actually work.

  • If you don't want to sign up for Youtube Premium, you can get a three month free trial if you're happy to sign up to the basic Google One service for £1.60 pm. You can cancel at any time.

Be warned though, if you use Youtube a lot it will be very hard to go back to seeing ads again afterwards.

I know its a lot of money but for me its better value than Netflix. I watch Youtube videos a lot for hobbies etc

  • Just installed Adblock on my ipad air 4, seems to be working for YouTube.

  • It feels like the iPad apps are a bit whack-a-moley, occasionally YouTube will find a new way to deliver ads which circumvents, then after a while apps will adapt

  • I'll keep an eye out...

  • Also not a fan of the 3rd party youtube apps I've tried.

I used Vanced and have never had a problem with it. It's basically the same except you can play videos in the background. I can't remember what one I use on our Firestick, but yeah that's a bit more flaky and often requires updating. Still preferable to the ads tho.
