Rationel timber, triple glazed.
would you mind sharing what those cost?
-
• #5354
For those two windows specifically or generally?
The big window was £2k - then you install, mgmt fees etc on top

That’s good to know! Fixed windows tend to be a fair sack cheaper than opening ones, what about the small one?
I have a feeling lead times will mean I can’t go with Velfac/Rationel, last time I asked about Velfac it was 10 weeks. -

i think my issue is i dont understand what is possible, can i make the opening for the door bigger? by how much before i have to start thinking about steel etc?
are these questions I need to get someone out for or will a door manufacturer have some idea?

For our big Maxlight window we had to have a ceiling and floor beam put in bc it was replacing an entirely brick wall with a very thin framed glazing.
I would give Maxlight a call and then ask them for their advice - but probably worth getting input from a structural engineer.
if you want the cost of our Maxlight door for reference happy to let you know

That's less than I thought for a TV of that size!

The nice wavy effect is just the glider system, and can be had from other manufacturers than silent gliss.
The gliders are on a string and can rotate and the distance between gliders/hooks and the amount of fabric in between creates the waves. Can't find the brand I used, and as I am in Germany you'll probably have different systems, but my new curtains are standard tracks and cheap fabric.

If ever there was a good excuse to not go to work, its winning £30k.
Genuine question, why are the bricks/breeze blocks not staggered? I don't know anything about bricks but it looks different.

And for Bifold vs French vs Sliding doors is one better, or do I need to stop being so lazy and do some reading?
-

Based on the assumption your goal is to open up the back as much as possible, physically not just visually...
French good for sub 2.2m (ish)
Sliding good for 2.5m and above
Bifold often fail. -

The steel lintel in the picture I showed was around £730+vat and is about 4m

I've been really impressed with Rationel in terms of price, options, thermal efficiency.
There was a Grand Designs episode in Dulwich this most recent season and the woman found a very reasonable supplier in Romania(?) and went direct to them with her Architect/builder. So it could be worth looking at. Also there is several good reddit threads on this type of thing which I found really useful for looking at peoples experience post install. We're going for a bit of a fancy option on our doors with Maxlight but the most important point here seemed to be reliability - I read too many cases of bi-folds breaking and being a pita to resolve. That just put me off. -

Bifold often failI agree fully with this. 1.1m is about your limit for a triple glazed glass door because weight. I shan’t admit what my job used to be but I’ve opened a lot of bifolds and they’re invariably clunky very quickly after they’ve been fitted. Maybe just lazy owners not adjusting them. Once you’ve waggled and crunched them open they make a nice big hole to the garden but for the 90% of the time your doors are closed bifolds have too much frame and not enough glass. Sliding are best.
Velfac/Rationel
But my experience here is that these brands are the Stone Island of windows and doors. 15 years ago Velfac were the shit but competitors now offer better for cheaper. Find a local supplier that does a few brands so you can compare costs and quality.

fancy option on our doors
We need more info!
And for Bifold vs French vs Sliding doors
Slide and pivot doors also an option. The slimness of sliding doors with the ability to fully open like bi-folds. Each pane slides independently to the opening point and then pivots open so a different technique but removes the clunkiness of bi-folds.
They’ll have maximum leaf / panel sizes. Just give em a call with your dims, or email or course.
