Mechanically speaking, both things are sprockets. The parts that are even numbered will (theoretically) wear less quickly, so you can use either or both depending on what you want to last longer. The chain will wear at the same rate regardless.
His supposition assumes a single-speed drive train and being careful to fit the same way after any disassembly.

@Scilly.Suffolk I'd never hear a chainring called a sprocket before, another fine mess I got myself into.
Sheldon uses the term 'sprockets' in this article.
Is he saying it's better to use even tooth chainring and cog or just cog to maximise drivechain life?
