That's always been the case and not just in the U.S., although they do provide a particularly loud and colourful drama. Few years before their civil war, a southern congressman nearly killed a northern senator with a cane in the Senate house. Trump would have been right at home there. In the Democratic party, as it was then.
U.S. politics has been like this more often than not.
