An old school sales guy I worked with had an anecdote from back in the day...

His boss started berating him about not having enough client lunches so he just started going to lunch and asking them to bill him for two meals.

The story is told the other way about Siegmund Warburg - the client dining room did two sittings of lunch so that he could pack more clients in per week.

Mate of mine used to save walking to the kitchen in his shared house by boiling pasta in the kettle. Had a coat hanger system to put the sauce in a jar into it too. Same bloke also decided that getting dressed for less than half a day out of the house was silly so he attended lectures at uni in pyjamas and dressing gown.

Friend of mine did this. Company policy was to pay for you own lunch unless you lunched with a client. So he always ordered double lunch and gifted the second one to a random stranger

Had a hungry colleague who asked me to join them for a curry lunch and wanted to expense it (me being the ‘client’), got back to the office and an actual client turned up expecting a lunch so said colleague went back to the same restaurant and had another curry

I used to have a bi-monthly dinner with the director of an industry body. Both of us had good reason to pay for it, so we simply took our own wives to excellent restaurants and compared notes the next day. My company always did rather well at the industry body awards dinner.

Good few years ago one of the drivers at our depot used to live in his car in the car park. Used our two ring burner for all his meals, he was in a disgusting and really sad state, in the end they had to remove him from public facing duties. I digress. One day there is hell of a commotion in the mess room, he is boiling a pheasant that had been struck and stuck to the front of a train in the communal tea urn.
It had a happy ending though, he ended up in a Railway Benevolent Home for his last years.
