  • This is the one I was thinking of, cheers!

  • Yeah that's a good idea, thanks. I've been doing some reading and think I'm just gonna get a tank and hook it up to a preamp as per this video
. It's only for making a bunch of weird noises

  • Bit of a novice question here, but are digital synths typically able to transmit their LFOs as midi to other devices? I'm hoping to modulate some of the parameters on my DD-500 using the LFO on my Virus Ti.

  • I don't have many, and the ones that I do have aren't particularly fancy, but that's not a feature I've heard of before.

  • Not usually, for a couple of reasons. LFOs aren’t in the midi spec (though synths can theoretically use “system exclusive” values for things like that) and secondly, the 0-255 range doesn’t give you much fidelity for transmitting a smooth ramp or sine LFO. You’ll inevitably get a lot of stepping. Internally a synth can use much higher resolution for LFOs to avoid stepping but midi will always have that limitation.

The Elektron Octatrack has LFOs available on its midi tracks, but it doesn’t transmit the actual LFO value over midi, rather you assign them to midi CCs. Eg filter cutoff.

  • Same on the Blackbox. Totally transforms everything!

  • Yeah it's a lot of fun. I'm about to embark on a bit of a journey with external control (both midi and CV) as my Cirklon preorder came up. Gulp. Need to sell some unused stuff to pay for it. If anyone's interested in a JU-06A, TB-03, Novation AFX Station or a Korg Arp Odyssey module (black & orange version), let me know. All immaculate condition.

  • I was totally broke by the time my pre-order came up, after years of waiting.
By that point I just couldn't be bothered with it, so stuck with my MPCs 🙄

  • Yeah, I waited nearly four and a half years. Crazy really. There must be lots of people who have totally changed their way of working by that point. Or who just aren't interested anymore.

I'm going to give it a go (I particularly want to try a setup that's just the Cirklon and my small modular) but very much in the knowledge that if it isn't working for me it shouldn't be hard to liquidate it and get the money back.

  • I've committed to not buying any more gear for the foreseeable future otherwise I'd have grabbed the JU-06A.

Not played one in the flesh yet but from everything I see/hear, they sound awesome. Definitely willing to bet they sound much better than my JX-08 (in terms of the quality of emulation at least).

  • It's a great sounding synth, it just doesn't get used because I have an SH-01A (and too many other things). I really like those classic simple Roland synth designs. I've done so much stuff with the TAL Juno emulation plugin in the past.

  • Upped my fx game. Always wanted an eventide rack fx unit, could only afford a ensoniq dp4, but this will do! Sounds great and is just perfect for techno and ambient weirdness.

  • Space is the place. My favourite effects pedal.

  • I think I need another VCA! I just bought Noise Engineering Loquelic Iteritas. I have MI Veils, but using three inputs (splitting the ALM MCO sub, PWM and Wave) and East Beast is in the last input.

I might get the ALM Tangle Quartet. What's the deal with the Pip Slope and the O/A/x2?

The Loquelic Iteritas has inputs to modulate both Pitchs, Modulate, Fold and a couple of other things.

The more I get into this the more I realise its about modulating voices to get movement.

  • You can never have too many VCAs!

    https://youtu.be/JKqcQxLjno0

Tangle quartet = four linear VCAs
Pip slope = attack/decay envelope generator with looping function
    O/A/x2 = two offset / attenuverters

    All useful but also different.

There are two main types of VCA, linear and exponential. This is to do with how they respond to CV envelope shapes. Linear is often better for longer amp envelopes - notes gradually decaying etc - while exponential is more for rapid percussive envelopes, transients, things like that.

The reason I have the Doepfer dual VCA in my rack (the depth only just fits mind) is because they are switchable between lin/exp.

The more I get into this the more I realise its about modulating voices to get movement.

Definitely a huge part of it. And that’s why I use the Øchd so much.

  • I'd really like another Veils TBH but now out of stock everywhere. There are loads of VCAs but not so many that do linear and exponential.

The Noise Engineering Quantas Ampla looks interesting, but that only does linear by looks of it

  • Most of the time linear is what you want (because you can often create exponential/logarithmic curves in your envelope generator), but there are certain cases where exponential is useful.

    https://learningmodular.com/linear-versus-exponential/

  • Thanks for that. So for E.G. a linear VCA combined with a slope generator. Makes sense.

  • Yeah, you just get different effects/outcomes depending on the curve of the EG and the VCA response. Exponential VCAs can be good for those snappy laser zap sounds, etc.

It’s nice to have the choice of exp/lin so you can experiment.

  • heard a track by a band called coil, last night on radio 6, had never heard of coil before.

Red Birds Will Fly Out Of The East And Destroy Paris In A Night - from the Album - Musick to Play in the Dark Vol. 1

i think that is up there with some of the best electronica / digital music i think i've ever heard. such an interesting track

  • Ex Psychic TV member behind that band. I used a lot of Jack The Tab in my DJ sets in the late 80's

  • @dicki Yeah awesome track. Experimental legends.

  • I might take a punt on a Pip Slope, a O/A/x2 and possibly the A130-2 (hard to argue with at the price)

    Cheers

  • Just check the depth works for you on the Doepfer, it’s 45mm. Like most Doepfer modules it’s not very skiff friendly. In my Intellijel Palette case it’s barely a millimetre from the back of the case.

O/A/x2 is mega useful. Pip Slope is a really nice simple EG. The Pons Asinorum is way more powerful, but I just forget how it works all the time.
