The best part of Glass Onion (and Knives Out) was Daniel Craig's Foghorn Leghorn impersonation. It kept me entertained anyway.

I think Rian Johnson is very hit and miss, he's really held very high but he has one good film and the next is absolutely shite.

I also found it to be very poor. Way too long.
I didn't find it particularly great, but similar whodunnit 'See How They Run' nailed it at about 1 hour 20. Long enough to meet characters, get a murder or two and wrap it all up.

• #19580
Agreed actually. Far too long and the pacing was all over the place. The second half really dragged!

the Dave Bautista character was very clearly a piss take of Joe Rogan I thought as well.

Hadn’t thought about that but yes now you say it think it broadly takes on Andrew Tate and the rest as well.

Watched liquorice pizza to ring in the new year. V good. I should get round to watching phantom thread one of these days.
-
• #19584
Phantom thread is excellent. Nice to see powerful but subtle performances all round rather than the usual Oscar nonsense of talk louder until you win a trophy - looking at you Gary Oldman.
The detail in the sets and clothing is also incredible.

Three thousand years after everyone else, but I thoroughly enjoyed Triangle of Sadness.

• #19586
Loved the first one. Second one felt like it dragged. Agreed on the DC accent though

Just walked put of the cinema, what a trip. 5 stars no doubt.
Edit: writer/director also made The Square. Now that makes sense. -

Banshees of Inisherin now on Disney+ for anyone like me who missed it in the cinema.
-
• #19589
Watched it last night. Darker than expected!
Enjoyed it tho. -
• #19590
Managed to see it the cinema got a free box of popcorn and glass of wine which is always a plus some of the language used brought back a lot of memories very much like a Shakespeare play thoroughly enjoyed it
-
• #19591
I finally got round to it. Would have loved to have seen that in the cinema. Best new film I've seen in a long time!

Triangle of Sadness - Fantastic, funny, but not one for emetophobics..
She said - Not funny at all (funnily enough :D), slick and brilliantly acted.

Watched that their Avatar. Particularly enjoyed the scene of a guy getting choked out despite holding his breath because he was under water.
-
• #19594
Is that because choke holds stop the supply of blood to the brain?

the best offer
watched last night, really good movie about an auction house owner being asked to value and sell the contents of a house owned by a mysterious woman, great characters and an interesting plotpolar
generic movie about a hit man retiring from the business, ok, a few laughs, but not really all that greatthe banshees of inisherin
watched after seeing it being recommended above, beautifully shot, good story line, details the life of people on a small island just off the coast of eire (?) in 1923the wages of fear ( la salaire de la peur )
set in a south american country following the trails and tribulations of a set of international characters french spanish american german, struggling to make a living in a dusty hot town, when a risky job transporting nitro-glycerin comes up only 4 people can get the lucrative gig, tense comradery takes shape amongst the people selected for the job.triangle of sadness
again watched due to the recommendations above, good piss take of the modern world, bloggers narcissists billionaires fashion models, a tables turned scenario which leads to some good role reversals amongst the characters, the stormy weather scenes reminiscent of high rise by ben wheatley where the idylic worlds slowly and comically falls apart -

the wages of fear
Have you seen Sorcerer? A truly excellent film based on the same source material. Directed by William Friedkin. Unbelievably tense throughout.
-
• #19597
haven't seen it but looks very similar in the synopsis, i liked the international feel of the 1953 french version. all the people speaking different languages interacting on the edge of survival made for a great atmosphere and a good wild west lawless feel to it
-
• #19598
I'll have to check that version out, sounds great. I highly recommend Sorcerer!

Seen Athena yesterday. Bloody great film imo, bit disturbing but also wonderfully shot in a technical way, with very long takes. The making of is also very much worth a look after watching the film.

For another French movie based on a USA book: Coup de torchon.
Locale moved from a small USA town to somewhere in colonised France, a cynical police agent whose wife has an affair gets his revenge.
Simple plot, but with lots of digs at the colonial government shit and a I think great ending.
Few more coming too, I am sure I read netflicks commissioned 3 of them
(Edit: Knives Out mysteries)
