Hey man, very sorry to hear this. I'm doing a bit of interpreting here but as you said two high breaks near the hip but you're just going in for a pin and some screws I'd say you have a lot to be thankful for. Snapped my femur in half with a very high break and I was about 1/2 inch away from needing a new hip joint. People who need new hip installed end up getting a new hip installed every ten years and I think overall the hip is never the same from the first break. So this is very positive news! Just a bit of internal carpentry instead of big time rotational machinery installation.
Hopefully you'll be toe-touch weight bearing on crutches for no more than 6 weeks, after that it'll be a hobble but for example 3 months after my break I rode up Canonbie on my Brompton.
1) Don't rush movement, you'll be frustrated but it will come. Basically after the surgery your leg is solid and it's not going anywhere so just let it heal properly. Once you start moving yo should be able to tell the difference between 'achy argh I don't want to do this but I can manage' pain - this generally ok to a point, and 'sharp sickening ow fuck no' pain - do not do any pushing through this stuff.
2) Do whatever physio gives you religiously and to the letter, or as much as your body allows. Make sure you get a physio referral ASAP. Like I said the bone is now secure as fuck, what you have to do is rebuild the muscle and maintain the tracking movement through stretching and resistance exercises.
3) In like 2/3 months you'll be up and moving and happy. But this the the 'rest of your life' phase where you just need to do a bit of stretching but the band resistance work and funky exercises will keep your lower back, IT band, and knee aligned and strong. If you drop it here it will come back to bite you later when your biomechanics start compensating for little muscle weakness and you'll get problems down the line. 3 years in I've had to revert to some funky clamshell band exercises which is sorting out some knee pain as I didn't follow through after 4/5 months like I should have.
4) You're going to be ok. It's a huge bone and a serious incident, but actually it's a straightforward thing to repair and you'll bounce back from it. Take the pills, take the medical advice, do the physio and it will be a blip on the calendar and a "good" story in a year's time.

chat about banjo tunes/relationship endings
I'm sorry about the horrible breakup part, but this really made me chuckle. Such a fantastic niche.

Sad to see things take a turn for the worse for you, this thread was always such a balm. Heal up fast and hope everything works out.

Where else would you turn for solace and spiritual recovery than the musics that prominently feature murder ballads and loads of wonderfully weird shit?

I don't know you (or anyone on here for that matter) but have followed this thread avidly from day one. Gutted for you on both fronts. Hope everything works out for you and take care.

So sorry to hear you’re going through such a tough time. I hope things work out well for both of you and that you heal quickly.

Sorry to hear about the double pain. I had a fracture of the femur and hip screw about 10 years ago now and as youramericanlover says, you'll be up and about surprisingly quickly. Since then I've done Eroica twice and numerous sportives, so it won't hold you back! Do the physio as advised and heal up. Thoughts are with you...

Man, such bad luck. I'm sending you healing vibes and hopefully you come out of everything that's trouble right now and be happy and strong again soon enough!

Hey, I’ve only just seen this thread, but sorry to hear what’s happening to you. I broke my femur high up and got pins/titanium bone implant about 13 years ago. Was up and going on crutches very soon after the op, so you’ll make quick progress too I’m sure.
The advice from youramericanlover is spot on. Take the pain killers, get good physio. The most tricky part of recovery, and the lasting effects for me was around the incision/scar on the side of my leg/hip where the muscle has never quite recovered the same, but I only notice the difference between legs when doing big yoga stretches.
Enjoy the drugs while you can get them, it’s much more risky trying specialK when you’re not in hospital!
Take it easy. -

I’m so sorry to hear this, even without the leg break I can imagine this is heartbreaking. Wishing you all the best - much [internet-stranger-bike-forum] love x

Derailing the thread and the lovely sentiments being sent to @Creek_Tebsin as i was searching up on google where the Island was and discovered that on the main island there is a settlement called Twatt.
"Quick facts
Twatt is a settlement in the parish of Birsay on the Mainland of the Orkney Islands, Scotland. It was previously the location of RNAS Twatt,1940–1949. Twatt is situated at the junction of the A986 and the A967"Marvellous if not juvenille.

Oh mate I’m only just catching up on this. It can be very hard to realise that putting your own self care in a relationship first is what’s needed, it’s an incredibly difficult step to take but it sounds like your getting onto a better path.
Definitely get that Banjo out while you’re recovering! I’ve owned a guitar for at least 20 odd years, I’m still shit but it’s great to just disappear into for an evening :)

Very sad to read the turn this thread has taken, but I'm sure it will all work out in the end!

So sorry to hear your sad news with regards to your relationship. I had to end a relationship for the good of my mental health, still the hardest thing I've ever had to do, but hopefully it'll come good for you in the end, gotta look after yourself first and foremost, because you'll be fuck all use to anybody else if your head is not right.
Hope the leg mends ok too.
Still one of the most inspirational threads I've read on here, you've got a lot to be very proud of.
Peace n love, and hoping for a brighter future.

Honestly, been a bit too doped up to do full proper replies to people, but all of this support and niceness has really touched me, genuinely had a few wee tears reading through things. @youramericanlover this has been really handy, thank you! And thank you for your reassurance @JonD They got me up for my first few steps on an arjo the day after the surgery and even got seated on a chair and used the commode (which had been a bit of a panic after multiple days of heavy painkillers..). Yesterday was a wee step back in confidence.. I was feeling really good about getting up and on the zimmer and into a chair, but then a nurse hit my foot with the lunch table which made me really sore and tense and then 2 nurses I hadn’t worked with before tried to get me back into bed but were just pulling me and moving without really talking about what I had to do and I was just tense and panicky and sore so by the time I was in bed I didn’t want back out again.. I think a lot of the problem was less the nurses but a dose of morphine making me a bit foggy and unable to let them know that I needed to understand what had to happen as it was my first time doing it.
I’m feeling much more positive today, much more, less painful movement and got out into the hall with a zimmer, showed the OT getting up and down from the toilet and over into a chair so just a wee dip and things are much better today!Physios have been in each day since and I have some exercises to start on, able to bend my knee when I’m lying or sitting (it was just lying yesterday) but still haven’t cracked lifting my heel yet, maybe tomorrow after some more practice today!
@TotalShanner that’s a really good way of articulating that, thank you! Self esteem has never been great to allow for self care but I am beginning to recognise the importance of exactly that. @owl definitely going to be cracking the banjo out and picking away on recovery evenings I reckon.
@kjlem @damskodonny @johnnettles2 we nearly bought that when we were first looking up here! Then we quickly realised that was a ridiculous thought and we had nowhere near enough money/skills to get anywhere near that being habitable and nice!!
