  • I used to go to Bodeans on Poland Street all the time before gigs, you'd get a fuck load of pulled pork/ribs for £7 odd. No idea what it's like nowadays

  • Fucking hell lads.
    Thank you.

I went le pain quotidian in the end and then red dog in soho for a burger.

But I now have a good list to look like I know what I’m on about.
That Italian place @Mr_Smyth is going to get looked at. (She’s not into the old gender stereotypes but her cousin is and I might recommend to it)

  • yeah, fries portions weren't as big as I remembered and the red baskets have gone and there's fewer tvs but for the money it's still great and I was surprised how it'd slipped my mind having gone there nearly weekly a decade ago. actually went on my first date with my (now) wife

  • You may have already made a booking but I can recommend bocca di lupo on archer st, always good.
In between Pimlico and Victoria is cacio e pepe, which I took the missus too for an anniversary dinner, on the intimate side, but that’s no bad thing on a date night.
Was a couple of years ago but I have good memories..

To be fair the probably were serving too many fries. It was like you used to get a whole tray of fries. Proper stomach busting portions.

  • Any recommendations for Moules Frites in East London? My kid is mad for it and could be a could excursion for us in this netherworld.

  • The Dove on Broadway Market. Not eaten there in years but it’s a Belgian style pub and has had them on the menu forever.

Otherwise the Virgin Queen down the road is pub / chippy so probably does them.

  • Xmas and birthday presents tend to be experiences (food mostly) rather than physical gifts these days.

Youngest daughter treated me to breakfast at Dishoom Kingly Street. Not my first visit, but it was for her. Said that it was the best hangover cure ever :)

Yesterday Mrs M took me to Rules on Maiden Lane, then on to the Savoy American Bar for more drinks and piano music

Service was meh at Rules, also disappointed that no one ever dresses up these days. Maybe I am getting too old, however the food and wine choice was good.

The Savoy Daisy cocktail and champagne, was a great way to end my birthday treat.

This is true, the only people with cash these days are new money tourist punters who rock up to these kinds of restaurants in trainers and T-shirts (albeit I assume expensive ones). I had a similar experience in a recent business lunch in Rules, wouldn't recommend again.

  • Any recommendations for nice dinner London Bridge area? Bit overwhelmed with choice but haven't been out for food there in ages.

  • Padella is banging and affordable if you can deal with no reservations. You can book via an app (used to be called walkup but has changed name I think) and chill in a local bar. Highly recommend.

  • Hawksmoor also a good option.

  • I am looking at exactly the same thing (well lunch not dinner but nice meal).

If your budget stretches, Trivet is supposed to be great - I'm trying to decide if ours does or not, or what our alternatives might be

  • Any suggestions for somewhere good and fairly fancy (40th birthday) to go on a Friday lunchtime?

  • I still rate Salt Yard, not been to the new one in Borough but been to the one on Goodge St. It's reliably delicious in my opinion.

  • What kind of thing do you like/whereabouts would be preferred re location?

  • Oof Trivet looks great but probably more relationship anniversary event level of spending!

  • Yeah I had decided it was where I wanted before I checked a menu and am now looking for alternatives!

  • Lupins is great and not super spendy. Padella great too

  • Not too specific. Somewhere fairly central/east/north with a tasting menu (not fussed about matching wines).

  • Bar Duoro in the SOuthwark arches is nice.

  • Six by Nico is fantastic value tasting menu in Soho. Really enjoyed a meal there at the end of last year...

  • Cheers both. I keep meaning to go to Brat but probably want a tasting menu for this one.

Six by Nico looks good and will try and go there at some point but I think I want something fancier for this one.
