Sure, my thinking was more like "for the price of a good belt you could also get a used watch" (probably the belt would be a bit cheaper, but still I'd rather put the money towards a watch than a belt as I wouldn't need a belt for other stuff - if I do need to really bring stuff with me (water, snacks, maybe even clothes) I'll actually just take my vest. This is more comfortable for me personally than carrying a lot of stuff around my waist, never was a fan of that).

I just run with a watch and headphones - I really like the simplicity. But when I did/do run with a phone then the flipbelt is my go to. Although the Salomon one looks interesting

I'll take it off you if it comes up a bit too slim. I think I'm a little bit smaller than you and some versions of these come up quite narrow.

I have the Salomon belt and a flipbelt and would never use the Salomon one again as the flipbelt is so much better for me.
If I need more I’d wear my camelback marathon which I can get a phone in and even a jacket for any stops
Would be happy to sell the Salomon lightly used for postage and a forum donation if anyone wants it…

I'm getting ill - sore throat, fatigued and tender glands in my neck. Today is 8.1km race pace. I should skip it, right? Or replace it with 8.1km jog? My partner had this a couple weeks ago and it took her an age to shake. Trying to mentally prepare myself for theast 2.5 weeks of this plan being totally derailed.

Yeah, either rest or jog if you feel you can.
Fingers crossed it's not too bad

Another vote for flip belt

I run with a phone all the time.. got iPhone mini though which fits snugly into the side inner-short pocket of my favoured lululemon shorts.
I tried Apple Watch for a while but I didn’t get along with it.Completely at-odds with much running ‘lore’ I carry: garmin watch, chest HR strap, phone, AirPods and currently a torch with me on most runs.

Haven't opened this thread as haven't been able to run in 3 yrs and it's depressing to read about people who can. Problems with my pelvis had been going back about 8-9yrs, and I finally got a(nother) diagnosis yesterday.
After an X-ray, the doc was really excited to tell me that it's an ectopic bone formation, which is 'extremely rare and may cause significant disability'. The only peer-reviewed paper he could find was just 6 mths ago, and comparing the X-rays on the paper, my case is much worse than the one in the case report. But positively, their example was of an active person, who got back to their previous levels of activity.
So, MRI later, but right now it looks like pretty major surgery to remove the growth on the bone and nail the front of the pelvis together. Not ideal, but it may be what it takes to get me running properly and pain-free for the first time in almost a decade.
I'm taking the positives, but it's kinda annoying that none of the medical professionals who've looked at it in that time (including X-rays and previous MRI) noticed a fucking thumb growing out of the top of my pelvis.

There are always future races. Take a step back and do what you are able. Sounds like your body is letting you know.

I hope this gets the outcome you want.

+1 R&R give yourself chance to fight it off. Frustrating but there'll be other races and this training block will still benefit the next block.

Sorry to read about this - and sorry for chuckling at "a fucking thumb growing out of the top of my pelvis". Really hope surgery goes well and that it's thumbs up from here on in.

Also - phone in a ziplock back. Because sweaty.
Absolutely yes to this. My poor phone wouldn't stand a chance if it wasn't in a bag.

Good luck man hope it works out OK.

In 2nd run since illness I managed to go over on my ankle. Currently on the bus home. R.I.C.E will commence once I'm home. So fucking annoyed.

Nitecore as recommended. Very lightweight (I keep it on my keys) but maybe not powerful as you might need.

I posted in the deals thread but given running is one of the main activities people use a smart watch for thought I'd signpost it here as well there are some pretty good discounts on Fenix 7s, 7 and 7X at Beaverbrook if you're feeling luxurious. Pretty sure this is the cheapest the Fenix 7 has been since launch.

The 7S Solar Sapphire for £464 possibly the pick of the deals.

Update on my trail marathon training. Three months in, three to go. Currently doing two 9 mile weekday runs and a long run of about 16 miles at the weekends. Going to slowly drop in a third weekday run, something a bit different like loops of my local park to keep it interesting. Also am aiming to do a self-timed half mara on the actual course in a month or so. Just as a kind of dress rehearsal to the hell that awaits. Did a first Park Run the other week which was really fun. Yesterday's long run was fuelled with two Snickers and a can of Coke. Switching to SIS/shot bloks soon probably.

How're you getting on?
ah that is a consideration if you've a bigger phone, luckily I have a small iphone which makes the flipbelt a much more comfortable option. Not sure how you'd far with a chunkier model.
Also adding music/podcasts to a watch is a bit more of a pain IMO, when carrying the phone its just ready to go without any setup. Maybe if you had an older/smaller phone lying around you could use that as the player e.g. download music/podcasts over wifi and then play over bluetooth.
Another reason I like having the phone is for maps, if I'm taking a longer route its good to have the option of not getting lost.
