  • Cheers.

I need a front wheel for one of my bikes, at that price I’m as well (or even better) just buying the set!

  • Anyone know if those wheels can be adapted for quick release?

  • They’re are qr aren’t they?

  • Yes.

I've bought another set. It just insane value. It'll keep my winter bike going for years..

  • Hunt now have carbon wheels up as re:new (inc. some 40% off).

  • Aha! Thanks!

    Edit: grrrrrrrgh too slow!

  • Ha! was about to do the same but seems they are all sold out now :(

edit - found a set 0f 650b wtb rims with fancier hubs for £68. Ordered.

a shame that there weren't and silver 20h/28h Pave single rims lefts!

    Link?

  • Amazing, exactly what I needed - searched earlier and couldn't find that combo

  • Yeah not bad at all. I only want to impress the gravel bros with 650b

  • Now, any bonkers deals on 27.5 slick / gravel type tires?

  • Alot of the Google reviews for the superstar wheels are really bad, which put me off.
They're so so cheap, how and why?
Running and operating a CNC machine shop is quite expensive in the UK, alongside anodising, packaging and posting, it's all a fortune of money.... The vat officer is taking 20% too! ... how are they undercutting imported products, and why?
I can only guess they bought containers of rims/hubs/spokes and it still pays to build them into wheels, even if the return is miniscule?

  • Yeah I have wondered the same.
The reviews do seem to be very mixed, although there does seem to be plenty of folk with no problems at all.
fwiw I've had one SS wheelset before, 26" wheelset for my dh bike about 10 odd years ago and I couldn't fault them. Ragged them for years and don't remember even re-truing them.

I can only guess they bought containers of rims/hubs/spokes and it still pays to build them into wheels, even if the return is miniscule?

I'm guessing that this is basically it. I think they were buying hubs/rims literally in the tens of thousands and then probably not making a huge margin on them? Pretty much all of their hubs are rebranded Novatec.

It's worth noting that that these recent discounted wheelset are probably being sold on at a loss or maybe only just breaking even.
I'd read somewhere on STW that they sold the wheel making side of the business recently and wont be selling any more wheels going forward.

  • The chap that owns it posted on STW. He's getting out of the wheel game and wants rid of the stock apparently.

    Hence the giveaway prices.

Yes as said above we have sold off the wheelbuilding side of the business due to supply chain problems making it impossible to get everything we needed to make wheels, someone offered us a good price on the machine line and that was it.

So we are clearing out the stock we have at below raw materials cost.

im sure we are going to get people saying they were originally overpriced etc, well off you pop to buy your generic asia stuff for more than we were selling our UK made wheels originally….. your loss not mine.

Yes, been a bit busy making medical stuff for a few years. Had two babies, moved house, life busy and complicated so no time to do all that and launch new stuff when you couldnt get raw materials for sensible money.

Just sold a few hundred wheelsets in a day or so. all the preorder stuff is waiting on freehubs being assembled and spacers landing to be able to ship them out. everything is built and boxed, once its gone its gone.

note we have thousands of spare parts which will last for years, and we can get more made if needs be. so no they arent disposable junk. Im sure its going to make alot of people happy to get a true bargain for once.

  • In fairness, most bad reviews I’d read back in the day said ‘they then fixed it’. Obviously given they’re shutting down, you can assume for £37.50 a wheelset they aren’t going to offer lifetime truing (clearly entirely reasonable). I think I got more than a bargain at c£50. But it’s all moot given their withdrawal from the market.

If you want quality wheels at quality prices, buy hand built from a reputable wheel builder. Otherwise see the ‘which wheelsets’ thread if you can only afford cheap factory built… Though personally I’d just browse the superstar rims selection (only 66% off..) and supply them to a local builder, or pick something relatively easy like 32 hole with 2x or 3x lacing and try it yourself.

  • Ah yeah, that all makes sense. Some amazing deals then. I just can't see how it's worth it for them to build them up for some of those prices.... and then the effort of sorting the odd warranty down the line (I'm sure some people will still claim on a £50 wheelset). Hat's off to them.

  • I’m trying to get some but 75wheelset doesn’t seem to be working?

  • Hold fire on doing any shopping with Ribble, it looks like they are about to go through some shit.
Haven't filed their 20/21 accounts and this only happens if they have had two warning letters from Companies House and have not responded.
