Not Benedict but the one before him again stayed fairly quiet all through the Jugoslavian civil war. That is until we got reports of groups of Serb men standing by the wayside while Bosnians fled on foot, the Serbs would grab young Bosnian women out of the human column and gang rape them in plain view of family and neighbours.
That’s when the pope finally spoke up against the outrages that were going on. Not against the rapes mind you, but against the relief organisations who provided the victims with emergency contraception.
