I find it pretty hard to judge people for those decisions tbh. Without living in those times and being in their shoes, I don't know how much of an appetite for prison or being shot in the head I would have had. Maybe I'm a coward, but I think it's pretty easy to say "I wouldn't have joined" from 2022 Europe. Wasn't his disabled cousin taken from the family and executed?
I spent some time talking to a friend's grandfather who remembers the war in Austria. He answered his conscription off the back of 300 Russian PoWs being shot in the head in his home town. That's going to affect your decision making.
