  • I’ve got an older fixed Stanley knocking around and it is a nice thing for sure. Seems there’s a few nicer fixed options from some carpet fitting suppliers such as the Delphin.

I do accept that Stanley and artisanal hipster don’t go hand in hand but at the same time I’d have thought there must be many folks working in the the artisanal hipster trades(like me) who use a Stanley daily. Sure, I could use a nice kiridashi for the same purpose but I’d spend as much time sharpening as working if that was the case.

Hmm, maybe I need to be the one to create the market and fill the niche?
How hard could it be? Presume I just need to replicate the sliding mechanism inside some flat scales then make handles from whatever fancy things get knife geeks hot under the collar…

  • How hard could it be?

    Depends on your skills!

Speaking as somebody who has been dablling with CNCs, mills, lathes, 3d printers etc for a few years I've had some pretty harsh lessons that even the most simple fuctional objects can be a bitch to design and make.

That said, thats almost entirely down to my lack of suitable skills and experience! Probably a piece of piss to somebody with the correct knowhow...

  • I don’t have these skills but I’m sure I could butcher an existing mechanism into a nicer handle.
I can make stuff by hand but cnc/milling is a bit beyond me..
