  • Santa has been very kind this year.

12 years of no Christmas presents and then this suddenly out of the blue.

It's like cutting with a laser. Actually that's bollocks, this cuts way better than the laser CNC I use 😂

    I am delighted.

  • Looks rad too

  • Bling! Happy times in the kitchen 🔪

  • I finally got an Opinel No7 for touring next year. Absolutely over the moon.

Got a nice smoked Chorizo to work through with it too.

  • Does anyone make an artisanal hipster Stanley handle? Preferably retractable.
Not looking for a folder or mini utility keyring style. Like a fatmax but made from antique Japanese copper and unicorn ballbag etc?

I use one everyday and deserve something fancy…

All my overalls have holes in them from sticking classic fixed blade ones in my pockets and the mechanism has died on my retractable so it keeps slipping.

  • Not looking for a folder

    But why not?

  • Its taken me a few attempts but I've finally got the technique down for sharpening with a whetstone. So satisfying when the knife just glides through tomatoes and peppers.

  • Because I like nice handmade tools. I can get a posher Stanley/bahco etc easily enough but was hoping someone had spotted something a little bit more special for every day use.
The makerknife is cool but not quite substantial enough for me.

Considering how broad the world of fancy knives is I’m surprised there’s not more options for those who go through a handful utility blades per week.

  • I think it's because there isn't a commercially viable intersection between people who use knifes regularly for a practical purpose and those who buy fancy knives.

Have you searched etsy? I've just discovered how wide the world of SAK scales is on there.

  • I reckon adding Ti to your search terms might help.

  • Not hitting the artisanal brief so much but have you tried the Milwaukee fast back utility knifes? Complete superior to anything else in the utility market in my view.

Feels like a quality tool in my hand

Edit. Ignore this. Just read the EDC thread. Fastback definitely does not hit spec

  • Those Opinel carbon are lovely, but beware the blades are very brittle.

I was demonstrating to my daughter how to clean jam sandwich residue off the blade by jabbing it into the ground and then retracting. Snapped the blade clean off. Oops.

  • Also because Stanley knives - cheap, mass produced, disposable - are the antithesis of the hipster artisan thing? They're obviously great, especially if you actually use them every day, but it's like asking for hipster artisan instant coffee?

  • I've got a really nice vintage Stanley knife. Would love to cast it in copper. Might give it a shot one day. Would need to find a suitable thread tap for the main screw though.

  • hipster artisan instant coffee?

  • I’ve got an older fixed Stanley knocking around and it is a nice thing for sure. Seems there’s a few nicer fixed options from some carpet fitting suppliers such as the Delphin.

I do accept that Stanley and artisanal hipster don’t go hand in hand but at the same time I’d have thought there must be many folks working in the the artisanal hipster trades(like me) who use a Stanley daily. Sure, I could use a nice kiridashi for the same purpose but I’d spend as much time sharpening as working if that was the case.

Hmm, maybe I need to be the one to create the market and fill the niche?
How hard could it be? Presume I just need to replicate the sliding mechanism inside some flat scales then make handles from whatever fancy things get knife geeks hot under the collar…

  • How hard could it be?

    Depends on your skills!

Speaking as somebody who has been dablling with CNCs, mills, lathes, 3d printers etc for a few years I've had some pretty harsh lessons that even the most simple fuctional objects can be a bitch to design and make.

That said, thats almost entirely down to my lack of suitable skills and experience! Probably a piece of piss to somebody with the correct knowhow...

  • I should have known this would be a thing!

  • I don’t have these skills but I’m sure I could butcher an existing mechanism into a nicer handle.
I can make stuff by hand but cnc/milling is a bit beyond me..

  • create the market

Are there many other actual hipster artisans like yourself? Think the real market is hipster-artisan-as-a-vibe for the soft handed consumer?

  • Tear one apart with the right mechanism and make a nice wooden handle for it?

  • Just found this Kickstarter for a brass utility knife and I'm pretty sure it uses a design stolen from a member of the 3d printing community.

I made one of these about five years ago...open source design (with limitation on resale).
