The fall of the Tory party

  • Nice that 2 of the cunts kept it just below a million. Bloody greedy rail workers.

  • A couple of staff and an office

This shit should be supplied centrally in a big shared, boring office or at least employed as such and work in the constituency and not subject to "expenses" that are just bunging money to family members half the time.

  • Agreed, although the rules on family members did change a few years back and new MPs can no longer employ family members so that will become less of an issue.

  • They claim £150 to 200k a year.

But in the financial climate, I’m sure the Mail and Telegraph would be frothing and venting at £44M in expenses if it was any other party, let alone that amount claimed doesn’t relate to how much time they spend on their side hustles

  • It is the other parties. Do the same sums for Labour.

  • Sorry, any other party in government, particularly if they had fucked the economy. Plus it’s mainly the Tories that have the side hustles.

  • I'm not so convinced. Something like 90% of that is probably office costs and staffing. There's the occasional one off scandals but as a whole it's not too exciting.

Clearly someone who either didn't understand how expenses worked or did know and ignored it prepared the schedule.

  • Zahawi must be running a horse crematorium if he’s claimed £1.6 million.

  • 20-21 data for all MPs

    Staffing – £105.8m up from £90.2m in 2019-20
    Office Costs – £15.2m up from £13m in 2019-20
    Accommodation – £9.3m, up from £8.9m in 2019-20
    Travel & Subsistence – £2.1m, down from £5.6m in 2019-20
    Security – £4.4m, up from £3.4m in 2019-20
    Other (including staff absences) £1m
    Disability – £176k, up from £141k in 2019-20

  • Some tidy increases there - how does the % compare with what is being offered to those on strike?

  • I think it was probably someone who wanted to highlight hypocrisy given pronouncements over the the last half dozen years but yeah, it’s the person who compiled the list that we need to focus on

  • I don't really see how it does that. Are we saying that MPs staff (most of whom aren't particularly highly paid) should work for free, MPs should just ignore casework, MPs should work for free?

What if the list was of Labour MPs (where on average the expenses are higher)? Would that also highlight hypocrisy?

  • I’m genuinely unsure whether you are being deliberately obtuse.

Labour are not in government, not implementing cuts. And these are not just MPs in general, they are members of the cabinet. So it’s really not equivalence at all.

  • I think the point is that these are real expenses that mostly pay for people doing real and necessary jobs. They aren’t just disguised comp for MPs to live the high life or subsidise their failing kids.

  • As above, not MPs in general, specifically members of the cabinet.

  • Yes, but the point is the same. They're not expenses in the sense that it's £44M of posh lunches. Staff for an office are counted as expenses, so it's still real people doing work.
And it's also not necessarily the case that if staffing costs go from £90M to £105M that everyone's just had a 17% payrise while nurses are striking - the number of staff will likely be different.
The headline figures in the tweet are so without detail or nuance as to be useless.

  • All the above, plus those in the Cabinet probably need more staff than non cabinet MPs as they likely only get a bit of Friday / some of the weekend to do constituency business. It's crap for constituents as their MP is more bothered about trying to run a bit of the country than their home patch - but it's the system we have.

  • Disability – £176k, up from £141k in 2019-20

I hope this has all been properly assessed by ATOS.

  • Iirc MP expenses were created specifically so that lack of wealth was not a barrier to office in terms of being able to afford to work for your constituents.

  • Moreover the idea that "taxpayer's money" or whatever is in short supply and we need to be fretting over little details of how it's spent is incredibly fucking Tory.

  • You’re right, I’m a Tufton Street sleeper agent

  • Another vile Tory shows his true colours

  • I don’t get this Tory cosplay thing.
So a few years back they were doing “power stance” in some kind of homage to 80s Tina Turner after having laid cable in her tights, now after the effective branding of Johnson and Rees-Mogg they are trying to look like they are in an Ealing Comedy
