just finished a rather arduous book on the poet Lorca which spent much of the final pages detailing the rise of the falangists in spain. I couldn’t help see the parallels. what came home strong was that it was precisely middle class and of an age conservatives - that era’s gammons- that transformed into the fascists in the 30s, motivated around defending royalty, nuisance unions, homophobia, and racialised patriotism.
