Sports Personality of the Year
I think it was created at a time when Brits weren't winning much in international sports, so that they could say "Here's a nice person. They tried hard and they were very British about losing gracefully." And any time somebody actually won, they got the award even if they had less personality than their snooker cue.

Sports Personality of the Year and even more so the people who get enraged about certain sports people not getting a nomination.
