  • I do wonder if the extreme cold will have damaged roofs and the subsequent rain and wind will result in a bumper crop for roofers.

I guess that’s not leaking pipework?

  • Yeah, from the flat roof..

  • Our watering timer on the outdoor tap cracked at the junction due to freezing while full of water.
Luckily the main tap was off at the time. Hopefully that's the only thing that burst.

  • Flat roof on our garage is now leaking badly

This. Tonnes of places water gets in and then busts it apart. Water in a hole in a stone can break it apart given a few freeze/thaw cycles, so it will split apart a felted roof in no time. Generally easy to fix so long as access isn't a chore.

  • This is what I thought about the burst water main up in Belsize Park - it's going to be a nightmare if your basement floods then freezes.

  • Replace with EPDM when you get it done. I did that to the garage in my previous house, it is a much better roofing material than felt and is reasonably easy to do yourself.

  • worst bit for me is i think we used the last of that red/pink paint

  • Turn off the flow and return of the boiler for 24hrs and you'll be able to see if the boiler or the system.

  • Will check it out, thanks

  • That's unlucky, but have to say that I like the colour a lot.

  • It's called 'streaky bacon '

  • Mmh. Doesn't sound like f&b.

  • Mottled pancetta

  • Is that an acoustic panel? was looking at that for some entrance hallway cupboards as the building has reeded panels in the common areas (late 50’s-early 60’s) so don’t feel i’m jumping on a style bandwagon just adding to what’s already in the building.
    is it heavy?

edit: apologies if you are jumping on a style bandwagon...

  • Theyre accupanels or something but i only have one panel cut in half, one behind each of my hifi speakers to adjust the bass response (cc: audiophile thread) not for any style points

Edit: to answer your actual question, nah not too heavy.. but again mine arent actually full height

  • Juts to check, you mean if I shut off return and supply to the boiler and the pressure doesn't drop - the issue is in my system?

I might actually get a chance to do this over christmas, usually a wife and toddler would be complaining about the cold

  • Finally, after nearly three years of trying to move, we're in the new house. Normally that would be the cause of celebration, but both kids are in floods of tears and want to go home, because the new house has quirks that we haven't got round to getting used to yet and everything we need is in a box somewhere.

Took three hours to find the fucking kettle, moving guys were great but were just grabbing stuff we needed - i.e. aforementioned kettle, bits of the vacuum cleaner, both kid's pair of shoes - and throwing them into boxes and chucking them into the van.

  • Congrats, I think

  • Thanks. It'll improve I'm sure, and the house has loads of potential, but it's been a long day (and three days before it) today and I think everyone is emotionally drained.

  • It can take a while for a house to feel like home or it can happen straight away.

It really disrupted my eldest when we moved and he was two (for a couple of nights).

Takeaway and a bottle of wine are essential moving day items!

  • Congrats Andy but also sorry the kids are struggling with the new place. Having moved to a fair few places as a kid I’m sure the adaptation will be swift and excitement will soon take over. Hope you find the kettles and shoes and get to love the new place :)
