Thanks all for the tips, all sensible ideas that have crossed my mind.
We have at least 5 plants currently infested, some large ones (so hard to cover without turning the living room into a birdcage) and also have a 16months toddler around the house, so need to choose the pebbles/sand such that she won't choke to death if she swallows some (unintentionally).
The apple cider vinegar traps were not effective last time we tried, but I don't think we put dishwasher soap in them, will try again.
