Broadband Internet & ISP Recommendations?

  • I had a look at bundling my mobile and can't remember why I decided against.

I should have another look, as you obviously found it worthwhile.

  • I did mine separately before o2 and virgin merged, but it’s worked out well since

  • More likely they had to put a new piece of tin in the exchange because the old unit was end of life/support and your upgrade was a byproduct

  • Sorry, more likely than what?

  • Yeah, they've done this a few times to us over the years.

  • Fibre broadband - how noticeable is the difference in speed/user experience for the cheaper 100ish MB packages vs. 500 or 900 MBs?

Don't do any gaming, mainly just Netflix and a remote connection for work - which have just about been fine with the current 20ish MB via Three's 4G wifi we've had the past couple of years.

  • Honestly, for what you're doing, 100Mb would be fine with a focus on setting up good network coverage.

900Mb will feel like shit if you have shit network equipment.

  • Ta! Was looking at Talktalk as they have bundles with the Eero6, and as fate would have it one of their sales bods knocked on the door - got first 3 months free, next 15 @ £30pcm for 150MB, that Eero, and Prime for a year.

  • Moving house hopefully this weekend (fuck crimble!), chatted with my broadband supplier today, engineer (open reach, so every provider except Virgin in the same boat) booked.......1st of February is earliest date!
Quickly downloading stuff before I move.

Will a data SIM in a tablet be good enough to stream tv (prime and bbc), or am I better seeing if my nextdoor neighbour will let me steal a bit of hers (if it's a strong enough signal obviously)?

  • I can look into what Virgin can do for you if you like?

If the property has had service before you likely won't need a tech visit and it's couriered out to you.

  • I'm more than happy with the deal I got from talktalk, just wondering what may work in the interim.
    Ta, though.

  • Ah, so it could be sooner than Feb?
There is an open reach hub/terminal type thing in the lounge at my new place, so has obviously had super duper ultra shiny fantastical fibre already.

  • No worries.

  • If the property has had service in the past it's usually plug and play in a few days time. It would be an 18 month type thing so not interim but I can get discount as well.

  • This is excellent news, thanks for your help.

  • Depends on how good the reception is but theoretically no problem.

I waited ages for virgin to get their act together when I moved in so ended up with a data SIM plugged into an old phone supplying my network with internet and could happily stream 4k and do other stuff.

Main issue was finding a decently priced SIM with loads of data at a decent speed and no contract

  • Three 5G router and monthly unlimited?
i’m pondering getting this until community fibre gets rolled out as i don’t want to sign up to Virgin as it’s way too expensive.

  • Will look into coverage at my new place, in case the fibre thing takes a while.
    Ta very much.

  • I had a bit of trouble as three reception was non-existent so couldn't use them or any of those that piggyback on their network which were most of the cheap options.

Lots of the phone SIMs aren't really unlimited so need a data SIM which is generally more expensive.

I'd be surprised if that three option was any cheaper than Virgin. You can normally get something like 250 Mbps for about £25 a month.

I get around 400Mbps for £25 a month using Three 5G, but I'm pretty close to a mast so the coverage is great. Not so great when they're working on other masts in the area, though.

Trying to register interest for Community Broadband but their form doesn't accept my mobile number as being correct (which it is), so will just have to wait for the leaflet.

  • Just tried it and it doesn't accept my number either.

  • Ended up trying a load of old and then random numbers. Still nada. It's borked.

  • In a true festive miracle, Community Fibre has just rolled out on my street so I’ve instantly booked an installation of a 900Mb/s package and cancelled my stupid £60/month Virgin monopolistic ripoff line.

Has anyone got any experience with Community Fibre? I’m particularly interested in the chances of getting a static IP; their website says ‘business customers only’, but I wonder if it’s a similar case to Virgin where the IP lease is long enough to remain the same unless the modem/CPE is turned off for a while…

  • Ooh have you already signed up or can I share my referral 😎

  • They've usually been pretty good when having to contact them before, so definitely worth contacting them and askinv. Also you can get a £100 Amazon voucher if you use a referral link. Can dm you if interested.
