  • I’ve noticed a lot of black dots on the underside of the lower leaves over this plant but not the upper. Anyone any ideas what it could be? It’s not going to be infested with some sort of bug, is it?
Also, anyone know what the plant is. I repotted what I thought was a dead plant, but this sprouted. Doesn’t look anything like the old plant.

  • Those are spores, it's how it spreads they use spores instead of seeds. It's a fern.

  • @KatBalou'sPhone cheers.

  • Why so unhappy?

Too much / not enough water / light / drafts ?

  • Anyone know what this is on a young rubber plant? Look like little black bugs leaving the leaves orangey, but can’t find much specific online :/

  • Is there much soil in the pot/does it need a larger pot and do you ever feed it with anything I. E. More than just watering it? Something like Baby Bio

  • Fungus gnats and how to get rid of them, talk to me.

Currently keeping them at bay with yellow traps although had to get rid of 3 Chinese money plants as they were beyond. Thinking of attaking them with Neem oil while covering the soil in the pots with a few cm of sand.

  • Been told you can get specific nematodes for them but they're always out of stock when I check

  • Lots of yellow traps, near the plants.
Avoid moist soil as much as possible, cover soil with sand / stones etc. and do not water from above.
Create more "attractive" options for them, namely a cider-vinegar trap; check this page: https://www.almanac.com/pest/fungus-gnats

  • Can confirm apple cider vinegar trap works a treat

  • What worked for me:

    Methodology:

    • Put net curtain over framework
    • Put plant inside framework+net curtain bodge
    • Put sticky yellow traps around plant, in the soil
    • Put UV trap inside net curtain body, next to the plant, to attract wily gnats that escape your yellow sticky traps
    • Do not water plants, even if you're worried about them drying out. Dry soil means adults can't lay new eggs
    • Leave this setup in place 24/7 until every one of those little motherfuckers has died

Took me about 3 weeks to get rid of them all, IIRC. I only had one infested plant, and it was a drought-tolerant one, so YMMV on feasibility.

  • I got a back of hydroleca and put a layer on all our pots. Seems to work well enough although you might need to scrape the top layer of soil off so it sits within the rim of the pot. Otherwise you'll be spending your days chasing balls of expanded clay around the house.

  • Thanks all for the tips, all sensible ideas that have crossed my mind.

We have at least 5 plants currently infested, some large ones (so hard to cover without turning the living room into a birdcage) and also have a 16months toddler around the house, so need to choose the pebbles/sand such that she won't choke to death if she swallows some (unintentionally).

The apple cider vinegar traps were not effective last time we tried, but I don't think we put dishwasher soap in them, will try again.

  • What if I cover with netting just the pot?

  • Yeah, don't see why not. If you get a pack of tights and cut the crotch off so you've just got the two legs, you can stretch a toe/foot/leg over the bottom of a pot and pull it up the sides. Then you can tie it off at the stem and just leave the plant to dry out a bit. Obviously might not be feasible with your biggest plants if they're too big to fit into standard hosiery!

I use a gravel topping too (the aquatic stuff for fishtanks), but found that if I only sealed off the top, then the little fuckers would burrow in and out through the bottom drainage holes instead, especially as the moisture levels dropped and they all packed into the last viable band of soil. I had to block off top and bottom to fully get rid of them.

  • Anyone got, had or given a Bloombox subscription?

  • Fungus gnats and how to get rid of them, talk to me.

I used nematodes. Worked a charm. Two applications of the weeny wiggly worms and no more flies.

  • Lemon tree has a mind of it's own. I mean, it seems pretty content...

  • Hivemind.
We have experienced a great die off of several houseplants and found a pot of dead plant infested with small 1/2mm white bugs (not larvae, so not fungus gnat).
What are they? How to kill them as brutally as possible but also biologically acceptable?

  • Our monstera also has an infestation on the underside of the leaves of a similar size black fucker. There's a bunch of black cack around, so I guess their poopoo?
Please advise me how to kill them too.
    Don't touch my babies!
