@spinnnout yep the noise is definitely a consideration, another plus for direct drive! I’d not thought about the fold-ability, that’s a good point, thanks.
I’ll continue keeping an eye out in classifieds.

i'm going to make an unpopular vote for wheel-on trainer. i just use my normal tyre so I only have one step (bike onto trainer) rather than three steps and I don't seem to go through tyres very quickly at all. it doesn't even seem to wear out summer tyres. maybe i don't ride enough!
i'm sure a wheel-off trainer is better in some other ways but wheel-on seems less faff (and smaller/cheaper).
Direct mount are more accurate, quieter and better all round
