  • Just listening to the news about the boat in the channel. Thinking of how cold that water will be is terrifying.

  • The water probably isn't as cold as you think it might be, and certainly less cold than the air temperature outside of the sea at this time of year. Most likely a few degrees into double figures. However, for someone not acclimatised to cold water, it would still be fatal pretty swiftly, bearing in mind that there's a great likelihood that they were non-swimmers, and that it was the middle of the night, and there would have been a massive wave of panic. It would have been horrible.

    Correct, however staying in it after 30 minutes run the risk of hypothermia.

    Isn't the point that it's still a long way below 37 degrees C and much more effective than air at conducting your body heat away?
