I'm kinda into the Japanese stuff, no idea if it's really practical, being carbon steel and all. But I find them pretty. I got the sasabe gata one myself.

The Peasant Mini is UK EDC legal, but not the full size Peasant, I think.
These were the ones Stonehedge and I are referring to… there are four different ones. Spear point, reverse tanto, sheepsfoot and sheepsfoot with scissors.

Was drawn to these instantly, but he's a massive bloke with massive hands, so a tiny wee fiddly thing like that wouldn't be much use. I still want the brass one for myself though!

Yeah I saw the Heinnie ones, really nice.
It's for a relative who's a woodcarver, bushcraft type, and he's got massive hands, so I figure he'd appreciate the bigger knife, and it's only going to get used at work, or when camping so the EDC thing is less of an issue (as I understand it, it's not illegal to have a knife bigger than 3 inch on you if it's for a clear purpose). He also doesn't live in a city so it seems less relevant. Appreciate the heads up tho.Watching this comparison has me doubting myself now though. The normal one is quite big!

Ah, makes sense!

It’s funny though, I can almost guarantee I buy myself the mini after this arrives and I realise that I want one.
I love gifting pocket knives. But I’ve come to realise most people aren’t that fussed by them.
Bought my older brothers one of these each for their 30th, A Wright pocket knives.
Although they’re more “sitting in a drawer doing fuck all knives” now.Bought another as a leaving present for a pal, made a nice oak box for it and everything. He lost it in the move. But I guess that’s the price of just assuming everyone else likes pocket knives like I do, lol.

He lost it in the move.
I'd be internally raging about this forever if I were you.
I only gift Opinel as they're useful but no huge loss if lost/unused.

I dunno, I feel like it’s a worthwhile lesson to learn that you can put loads of effort into a gift and it’ll still fall flat. Although you’d think I’d have learned to stop buying fancy knives after the first two weren’t that popular!

It will sharpen fine. Eyeballing the edge, I’d recommend sharpening at a smaller angle. It looks like you have something close to 20 degrees on there and for a Santoku you would be better off between 12 and 15 degrees.

I would be absolutely gassed if someone made me that box and gifted me a lovely knife!

Not quite the right knife, or long enough chopping board for the task, but good fun!

What it the protruding metal bit at the base of the handle for on the KA-BAR BK2 Becker?

Blade lock release?

• #5068
My guess is that it's a tacticool hard point for smashing windows or pumelling something with the handle.
-
• #5069
Yup, various places that sell it say it has a "window breaker" on the handle.

Cheers. I tried searching, but couldn't find anything in the specs.

Window smasher

Reminds me. Son got a “survival kit” from his German relatives for his 11th birthday - cute monkey logo on the case, stuff like a fishing line, bandages, paracord etc, all very innocent and then… this bloody thing falls out.
It’s spring loaded, locks, is well over UK EDC length and has a cord cutter and window smasher stud on the end. FFS.
He was thrilled of course. I had to be party pooper dad and confiscate it on grounds of illegality, but I did at least replace it with one of those sheepsfoot Real Steel Heinnie folders.

In other news, brother in law was absolutely made up with the Svord peasant. And tbh finally giving a pocket knife to someone who appreciated it has made my Christmas!
