He's no Graham Alexander

Gallant effort from the Dutch who imo were heavy underdogs. We just can’t seem to beat Argentina in the World Cup. Martinez stopped some really decent penalties.
Croatia getting to another semi final is next level. Back to back semifinals for a country of less than 4m is something else. Their penalties were proper textbook stuff. So, so good.

The 2 he saved weren’t remotely decent pens, but I will say once Holland went a bit more direct they looked difficult to deal with and the introduction of weghorst caused all sorts of problems. For me, he was way more effective than depay. Argentina just seem a fairly average side with the veteran messi being the difference, if Rodrigo de Paul is suffering an injury then they will be weaker. That semi final with Croatia could get ugly as the Croats don’t ever believe they are beaten….

Err, Grant Wahl has died? Fucking hell

Maybe it’s because he’s predominantly a U.S. name but it doesn’t seem to be big news over here yet.
Wrote some fairly scathing stuff about the tournament recently…

It's shocking. Thoughts are with his family and friends.
I don't want to go all conspiracy theorist, but it seems odd that a seemingly healthy, 48 year old journalist who has been critical of both FIFA and the Qatari regime dies unexpectedly during the tournament.

Move along now. Nothing to see here…

Oh shit that's tragic. Unconfirmed Reports it was a heart attack.

• #163635
He’d been ill while out there

The 2 he saved weren’t remotely decent pens
I think it’s fair to say that’s objectively bollocks. They were both good penalties, Martinez made them look worse than they were.

An expression I heard from an Argentinian friend: Before God created light, Messi already owed 3 electricity bills

• #163638
Yeah this esp the 2nd save that was great.

How can they be good when he made 2 dives (admittedly fairly full length)… to save them. Ultimately the odds are stacked against the keeper. Though he’s a renowned penalty saving expert.
Anyway. Back to the footy…

Not really following your logic here. They’re 2 world class saves, second one especially. He guesses the right way but even then has to be at full stretch and have wrists of steel to keep them out. Second penalty would be scored 90+% of the time. Given some of the really tame penalties players have had in this tournament, I can’t really criticise either effort.

To counter that I don't mind Ali as the Co commentator

Agreed, love McCoist's enthusiasm. So I guess it just about balances out.

Great header what a leap...like salmon named Ronaldo

I can't stand Bruno Fernández but that strike was magical so unlucky

Ok fair comment. As someone who when I played scored 20/21 pens I took I guess I was a bit of a perfectionist when it came to technique. I’m very probably being over critical!
That said he also has had quite a few saved.
Edit, I read the sun website so you don’t have to. And he’s also scored two more since the article was posted.
