Fossil fuels are actually ok, they’re the most efficient source of energy and are abundant enough to last for centuries. By attempting to switch the whole world to renewables we’re denying the developing world the opportunity to enjoy the pleasure and wealth that the west has had for 100 years and are effectively imposing energy colonialism. We’ve fucked everything having fun so sorry, but you can’t.
Also, climate change is good because it would be better if it was a bit warmer in England which is where I live.

What are the best budget rechargeable batteries? AA and AAA.
Usually used enloop, but we've got so many kids toys now I was wondering if there was a budget option so I can get loads.
Main uses are:
- Torches
- RC cars
- Stuff that makes noise

Which would be great if true but really our wealth is built on exploiting the people of the global south.

Radiator widths... I'm having a mare trying to source two replacements. Pipe centers are 1275 and 1285mm. These don't appear to be standard sizes.
Do I go for something like 1240mm units and use valve extenders (are these a thing? Easy to fit?), or am I missing something obvious?

are these a thing?

Well who knew...
So theoretically, buy a smaller rad the use extenders to fill the gap?

Ikea Ladda seem pretty well regarded. There's a 3 for 2 special offer on them until tomorrow.

Alright, thank you all! Will go for the balcony seat. Also thanks for the restaurant recommendations but sadly we’re based in Frankfurt, Germany 👌

I want to make my son a box with switches and lights on it, as well as other stuff that happens when he does the switches or presses buttons.
So far, I was thinking lights and a buzzer, any other ideas?
Do I just buy a 12v battery and connect it all in parallel (switches and buttons in series with their respective accessories of course)?
Where is the best place to source this stuff from. I'm an electrician, but remarkably uninformed about electronics.

Yes.
There's also this type which can be used in alone/ in conjunction with the above extenders /cut down to size

I remember having a little electronics kit as a kid that had a load of similar things and a board and crocodile clips to make it all work, was pretty fun. Depending on son's age could you get something similar and make it fun and young kid proof then let him pay around with the workings once he's older and inevitably breaks it.

Yeah that's exactly the kind of thing that inspired it, (like thishttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Sntieecr-Electric-Educational-Montessori-Learning/dp/B082NW2H1K/ref=sr_1_41?keywords=Electronics+Kit+for+Kids&qid=1670673873&sr=8-41 but he's only 18months so need to make something robust and super simple, so I don't have to spend all my time holding him up so he can do the light switches!

Needs fart noises, obviously.
-
• #115468
Yeah, something like that, maybe with a few more switches or whatever built into a nice box would be pretty cool.

I'd probably start with 22.5mm industrial product such as Allen-Bradley 800F range, it's tough and available in hose proof versions so when he spills stuff on it you can wash it down.

Add a vibration motor (as used in mobile phones) to give some movement to go with the sound and lights?
Also look at the voltage requirements, balanced against the cost of replacement batteries! -

Get him a couple of three plate light fittings some 2 way switches and 4 core and get him to wire a hallway light setup!
-
• #115472
Oh there will definitely be some intermediate switching ; )

Just saw a bunch of guys trowing rubbish out of the car they were sitting in on a parking lot, this really pisses me off. Was tempted to throw it back into the car but didn't do anything... What do you guys think is the best way to deal with a situation like this?

Pop it in the exhaust pipe when they aren't looking
I've come online drunk and lonely looking for an argument. What moral issue is trending right now, and what is the controversial side to take? thnx
