I think that also depends on whether or not they lied when they signed up?

Gove claims the sulphur can be refined out, he had a report commissioned.
But then I read a coal mine with BETTER coal got closed this year and I don't know what to think...besides that refining also costs money and energy.
So I don't know and it is all strange, as steel smelting is super energy intensive and Cameron pretty much already ballsed up the UK industry by refusing to back sanctions on Chinese Steel as the government there was dumping it at low prices.
They aren't going to give away that coal either to steel plants, so if it's not cheaper then the argument really is that it's "local coal", ok...but it is also local pollution and holes.
I know some industries cannot get go fully renewable (though steel smelting with magnetic induction might be a real thing soon?) but I just have my doubts.
What do people in Cumbria think?

local coal
local coal, for local people
I like to assume that the decision makers have spent longer than the 5 minutes that you, I or the Guardian journalist we get our info from have taken to understand the issue. But you never know with Gove or the rest of that lot.

85% of the coal is due to be exported so not for British steel anyway according to Twitter comments

The coal in question is for making the coke, i.e. carbon, used in steel production, not the energy production.

Hey you! Was just catching up on the thread and was thinking a post from you would be great!

Tx!
I still don't get why they closed another coal mine in England if it was needed, but then I am rather suspicious of pretty much everything these days, news is often not complete, there can be Politicking behind decisions, maybe that coal mine was a bit shite etc etc.

Yeah, they're being highly cagey about it, but it doens't matter how it's used, it still causes vast amounts of emissions. They claim it will be a net zero process because of carbon capture and whatever, but then today Gove tried to blag getting that through a commons debate without following procedure so evidently they don't want any accountability over their net zero claims.

I’ve just been down Paddy Power and put £5 on the land it’s on belonging to a Tory donor / Old Etonian / Offshore trust with untraceable beneficiaries.

Not sure people living here in Cumbria care that much, if it wasn't for Sellafield and a smattering of tourism we would resemble a third world country.
The carrot is the it will create jobs and that its "out West" so won't bother the richer end of the County
-
• #79490
About that- the jobs will likely be Polish or Romanian (maybe Turkish) unless Cumbria has ~500 experienced coal miners waiting and ready to go.
-
• #79491
Well, actually, coal mining isn't like it was, it's much more artisanal these days, so the 'miners' will really be involved more in curating the seams. Coal Twitter and Coal TikTok can explain it better than I can.

Plus 1200 in the supply chain somewhere. I think their theory is that the money from wages stays in the local area and is spent in nail bars and tattoo parlours (which is what the high Street is filling up with apparently)

Turns out coal mining doesn't have much of an impact on GHG emissions if you remove the assumption that it'll be burnt:

• #79495
That's great, thanks.
Undoubtedly we'd very likely be better off with more women running stuff.
-
• #79496
I think that assumption depends on the miners being part of the local community rather than living in dorms on site and sending their money home.

The company that seems to have massively overcharged Unite the union for developing a hotel and conference centre is the same company that was involved in the investigation that got the mayor of Liverpool and Derek Hatton arrested

Lols, with Cumbria houses pricing out the local from their home.

UK banking rules in biggest shake-up in more than 30 years
The government has announced what it describes as one of the biggest overhauls of financial regulation for more than three decades.
It says the package of more than 30 reforms will "cut red tape" and "turbocharge growth".
Rules that forced banks to legally separate retail banking from riskier investment operations will be reviewedThat being said, when the banks get bigger and richer, we'll all benefit. Because trickledown.

Not bad trolling by the FCA announcing a £109m fine for HSBC's AML failings the same day Hunt's announcing plans to remove all responsibilities from management.
