Essential winter clothing?

I have these, theyre warm and reasonably breathable. For me they're my cold riding gloves, good for riding around zero 0'.

I have some thin wiggle merino glove liners that I use to boost the warmth on extremely cold days. The super reflectivity is nice as well.

I was kidding honestly. Initially I wrote -10 because that's the reality and then I felt like I was being "that annoying guy" so I changed it in an act of self mockery.

That said, I'm a pretty cold tolerant person. I use simple leather gloves with a thermal liner such as Kincos or something when it's less than -10. Above that, I have an old pair of free Gore mid weight gloves.

If you're really cold, lobster mitts are the only way to go. Mittens would be better, but not suitable for a bike with gears and brakes.

More importantly, if your core is chilly your limbs will vasoconstrict and always be cold. Keep your core warm.

Just ordered a pair. I hope they are a little warmer than my Giro Xnetic H2Os.
I've been really happy with those so far but with the temperature dropping to zero or below, my fingers start to get a little too cold. :-(

Still in a massive quandary over a new winter jacket. I'm looking for something warm with some kind of waterproofness as it will rain at some point when I'm out. I love some of the Albion jackets (Insulated 3.0 and the Zoa rain shell), the POC Signal jacket and Gorewear's Endure jacket. POC is slightly over budget for me and I can get money off the Gorewear at the mo, but never bought anything from them before, but it is goretex so I know it's gonna be a good waterproof/windproof jacket. Any other recommendations?

The Rapha Pro Team goretex insulated jacket looks great to me. About perfect for what you’re saying. Looks very cosy inside and protective outside.

It's an unreal jacket.

I did look at Rapha actually, I've always liked the look of their Brevet jackets, be easier to try one on if their Spitalfields store was still there

How long out in rain?
What temps?
How long between uses? Can you dry the jacket?

Waterproof isn't breathable so you don't really want it all the time.

I'll be using it for general rides where it could rain white I'm out on the bike... and temp wise between 0-15 maybe... needs to have room for layers underneath. I can only ride at the weekend so there will be ample drying time.

For that range I would have said Gabba/Perfetto with 1 or 2 baselayer. It's not waterproof but when you got soaked it was still warm. Unfortunately that doesn't work anymore since they
switched to that Gore infinium.

0-15C is a big range. No single jacket will cover that.

0-10C
I always have a real rain jacket, could be a light one but a real one. Underneath a merino blend baselayer and then a fleece midlayer, with a full zip to vent, the fleece thickness depends on the average temp expected, could also be polartec alpha. You could also try a softshell, I had a quecha one that was brilliant, then if you're out for not long this will keep you warm if went. Insulated jackets get used from around 0C for me.
Also a face buff, covering your face adds a.lot.of warmth.

I tried the Rapha Brevet jacket recently and sent it back: far too short at the back. Some of their own photos show it:

It's also intended as a packable jacket so not very substantial.

I replaced it with the Rapha Classic winter jacket, a much better shape for me, warmer, but not as packable. Probably too warm for much above 10 degrees if you are going at any pace. But it's a great jacket and, so far, properly waterproof. Fabric is very prone to picking up marks though so would get a darker colour.

If you want something for "general rides where it could rain" would jerseys + packable rain jacket not be better? Shakedry in the back pocket?

I know I'm thinking of a broad range with the jacket... I will be layering up underneath so will be using less layers on the warmer end of the scale... a hood would be nice as well, but not essential... I'd go with another Arc'teryx as my Beta Sv is nothing short of amazing but I'm not gonna start riding in that

But do you want a rain jacket, or a jacket to keep you warm?

The only thing that comes close to both and functions is a softshell with zips, but it won't keep you dry forever.

In UK rain i wouldn't be out without a proper rain jacket.

I ride with an arcteryx alpha FL or variant of it. I don't like to be wet.

I guess I'm looking for the best of both worlds and I know I can't have a fully insulated jacket, that's also fully waterproof at the same time... I think my best option would be a waterproof/windproof jacket that can be pocketed/taken off if the weather picks up a bit

Genuinely not just trying to plug my jacket but the insulated gore tex is a genuine contender for best of both. I wear mine below 5 degrees even with no planned rain. It's very breathable, very warm.

Looking for overshoes, and there are too many options.

Castelli do a nice but a bit pricey range with primaloft gold.

The Spettacolo have been pretty decent below freezing when working a little hard but do have annoying hard line of stitching on the palms, so worth trying on. It's begging to soften up with time, they are otherwise brilliant. The zip is also a great feature for getting them on/off very easily.
