I'm sure you'll need more than one ride to form a full opinion, but whats your initial thoughts of the 1x gearing?
-
• #179
Maybe a little under geared, but more change of front ring rather than going to 2x. I had similar on the Slate but the Etap is definitely an improvement.
Big issue is how/ when do I clean it given how cold it is now!!

Ride it in the rain, that's what I do
-
• #181
Get straight in the shower with it and your kit on.
RIP your drains tho.
-
• #182
But doesn't your derailleur get all grimy?
-
• #183
This is a trap which I'm not falling for!
Cool bike though @GoatandTricycle I remember having a gravel bike, it was very fun.

What combination of front ring and rear cassette are you running? I pretty quickly increased my front ring on my 1X set up.
-

Assuming it's a 40t, thats 50kmh at 90rpm on 42c tyres, I think you'll probably be fine...
-
• #186
I found 40T far too small so sized up to 44T which was much better (granted i have a low cadence). Running 45c Tyres

I find 42 is a solid all road chainring size. I used to have a 1x road bike which I did all my riding on for about 18 months and there was a single occasion where my group was pedalling downhill and I couldn't spin fast enough to keep up. Otherwise it was plenty and that was on road and with an 11t at the back.
I suspect a 40-10 is enough to never spin out off road -

For me 40T with a 10T rear cog was far too spinny on the road, but as I say i don't like riding with a high cadence. All about what you're used to I guess.

Gear chat is boring… But I don’t think it’s just top gear speed but feel in the middle of the block especially when back on road.
That said it was a 70km first ride, I’m not going to make any changes for awhile.Bike is clean… sort of

Never was. Spurcycle or Crane E-NE.
Very nice bike! -

Probably prefer the cheap Chinese version over my actual Spurcycle. It's louder.

• #194
Ooh this is what I had maybe I still do somewhere.
The cheap one before I end up in a certain thread.
-
• #195
There's the argument to be made that buying counterfeit, be it spurcycle or birkin bags, is more golf club than not. Spurcycle has a much cleaner ring.
Anyway, E-NE is nice, cheap enough and not a (complete) knock-off. -
• #196
Sure. It was more having a £60 bell knocking about somewhere.
-
• #197
I've had a few of these. The black one I had was shit, the two brass ones have been great.
-
• #198
Second crane E-NE. Lovely little bells and you can pick them up for ~£25
-
• #199
How did the back half of the routing work out in the end? Sorry if I've missed it somewhere else in the thread...

It leaves the chain stay and enters the seat stay at the bottom. Not ideal but I’d forgotten about it. Been putting some miles on it and it’s been really great.
