You have probably heard of the Neutrino detector shielded from background radiation deep underground at Charing Cross Tube Station a less well known experiment was The Small Hadron Collider.
It was built in 1901 just off Burbage Road in Herne Hill at a cost of £4073 but it’s small 440m diameter doomed it to failure although they did manage to see one type of Boson particle.
You can still see some reminders including the cast iron chimneys of the six small steam engines used to power it.
