With no availability at the groomers combined with Mavis' coat getting to the critical tangle length and lots of muddy walks on the horizon, I decided to take matters into my own hands...
Any dog barbering requests, just holler

I'm still working on the campaign to expand our family (kids are 4 and 7) to include a dog.
We dog-sat a friend's rescue greyhound over the summer which was insightful, mainly in that it clarified that we don't want a rescue greyhound. She was adorable in some ways, and my daughter fell hopelessly in love, but it was a bit of spanner in the works of convincing my wife. Sweet as Edith the rescue hound was, she was super nervous, and kinda unrewarding in that... no playing, no snuggling, no time off the lead. She mostly just sulked or slept, and needed to go out for about 6 huge wet shits a day.
Made me want to look at some smaller and more confident/playful doggos. Sorry Edith.

How old was the greyhound? Our current greyhounds are lazy but are very cuddly and will enjoy a good play and are not what I would call unconfident.
Time off lead is a different matter, ours get plenty at home as we have a big garden but they are not safe to let off in public spaces as they will chase small fluffy things... -

Amazing video! Daisy is more a stop and sniff the most mildly interesting plants kinda dog. Hopefully we'll get there in time.

This points to an unsuitable diet more than anything.
Yeah, rescue greyhounds are super low drama but because they've had such shitty lives they apparently some won't really get snuggly with you...they just seem to be relieved to be safe and have a chance to rest from what I've heard.

Have a look at Underdog International. That's where we got our dog from. We just told them what we needed from a dog (happy living in a small house in a city, good with kids, good with cats etc) and they matched us with Crumpet. With a rescue you get more of an idea of their personality than you do with a breeder.

Ha, not really my scene. If we're dreaming of wheels plus dogs then I assume we've all seen the Shimano A Dog's Tale vid. Soz if already MacAskill'd to death.
The two little JRTs shredding... <3

If you want a small breed that will unfailingly want to play at the most inappropriate times and will want to say hello to everyone I can recommend a mini poodle...

Adore this video. So good

Well, that's 10 wasted minutes of my day I'll never regret.
There is literally nothing in the world makes me smile more than watching a small dog leap over a bump (cf. 1.41 and 7.08).

Our miniature poodle ticks all the boxes too, even to the point of being able to scoop up poo with one hand into a tiny bag.
Only downside is the usual pedigree prone to health issues (skin and diet allergies here)..... Oh, and the cost of getting one from a real breeder

Yep! We got the pick of the bunch though.

Poodle mixes get you all the benefits without most of the pedigree issues. I've got one crossed with a king charles and one with a schnauzer. Both super-fun, keen runners and players outdoors, hyper-affectionate snugglers indoors with no health issues.
Mind you, got them before canine inflation went through the roof.

Poddle mixes are great and anecdotally I reckon they're probably pushing for the most common breed right now. But they can be prone to seperation anxiety and resource guarding.

seperation anxiety and resource guarding
My guys have no issues with resource guarding, but do have the tendency to bark the house down if I'm not there. They weren't like this pre-pandemic though, they would just chill - they've got too used to having constant company.
Anecdote is not evidence, obvs.

Well, that was a fun 30 minutes - 10 minutes finding the fucker, then another 20 trying to persuade him to stop running around like a twat through increasingly distant fields.
