early 2009, having looked up the serial number.

I think I'm probably wasting my time on this aren't I?

However, if anyone has an El Capitan DVD I could borrow, please let me know so I can get some closure!

Can you get the original OS by searching for the serial number(?), as generally Macs can only be down graded only as low as the OS it came with, and I bought a white unibody MacBook in 2008 / 2009 and that had snow leopard.
