Lol, the plastic hasn’t anything to do with holding the nut in place.

I've never used those little things. They might stop you get scratched up if you're carrying your bike and haven't trimmed them far enough but chicks dig scars

Trimmed short like I showed upthread and no scratches.
I think having wee peely wally nubs sticking out beyond fenders looks shite.
