Dynamo hubs

  • As mentioned above, it depends on the diameter of the inner slot on the dropouts. The ENVE G series gravel fork (for 12x100 hub) for instance has dropouts that accept a 15mm hub end cap with a wider diameter when using the 15mm to 12mm adapter sleeve. Some Ritchey forks have swappable dropouts and because of this modularity they take a 15mm hub with either dropouts (with the 12x100 dropouts the reducer sleeve is required and with the 15x100 dropouts, obviously without a sleeve). There might be others, too, but these two are the ones I'm aware of.

Tbh, I find this a real PITA. Currently waiting delivery of a frameset which comes with a carbon fork specced for 12x100, fingers crossed it has the wider dropouts so I can use my 15x100 SON 28 front wheel with the sleeve.

If not, I do have a pair of spacers which came with a rear boost hub adapter kit I got off aliexpress (2 x 3mm spacers with an inner diameter of 12mm and outer diameter of 19mm) and which I've filed down to about 1.2mm of thickness. I used these on another fork when I found out that the old shitter precision 12x100 hub had end caps with 21mm outer diameter (essentially the diameter of a 15x100 hub) even though it was 12mm inner diameter, so it didn't fit together with the dropouts on that particular fork without placing those spacers on both sides of the hub. I did end up buying a new thru-axle with a longer threaded section just to have slightly more threads engaged because of the ~2.5mm wider hub spacing due to the extra spacers. Worked fine many thousands of km, nevertheless.

  • @Thrasher the dynamo hub you sold me now has lateral play and sounds like it's popping popcorn in the shell. RIP in peace. You jinxed it! j/k it had a good life with many TNRCs, commuting, and janky lanes.

  • It's a secondhand shimano one, I was informed that they weren't. Anyway all the local mechanics started slowly backing away when I brought it up

  • Time to update the audax machine to disc brakes

  • That means new forks, levers, brake, disc, pad, hydro vs disc debate...time and money down the drain it seems

  • DIY fixer. Nothing to lose innit...

  • Maybe I'll crack it open when the replacement arrives for the fun of it. Nice idea

  • I would never not pull something like this apart.

Every piece of electronics I've got that has died I've deconstructed.

  • There's quite a bit of info over on the CTC forum regarding Shimano dynohubs.

  • Some of the more modern ones have replaceable internals - I've done it on an XT jobby. The whole guts unthread from the wire side and you just drop a replacement in. Not an very cost effective but can save you the arse ache of a wheel rebuild (esp. if you're running discs)

  • Thanks both, I found the photo guide on CTC!

I absolutely don't have the time, tools or skills for that. I will give the hub away for rebuild so one of you weirdos (read: proper people) can repair it

  • shit! wanna borrow my SON? im not using it atm. ADHN x Pillar x SON delux all silver.

  • Left side is easy to service.
Right side is trickier, but the most complicated part is dismantling the electrical connector.

For the right side, you can cheat to regrease without a full disassembly if you back everything off a little and inject some grease.

There are some differences in the models of course.

Have 2 of those hubs. Keep going for ever with a little bit of love.

  • Haha thanks for the offer, that is some customer service considering I bought it from you 5 years ago and put at least 8,000 miles on it! Nah I have been blessed by Amey and Cagimaha who pointed me to SP PV-8 for £50 on SPA.

@wot maybe when my kids are teenagers will I attempt this :)

  • Hurting my brain figuring out the best way of wiring front light + rear light + usb charger (sinewave revolution).
    Does this make sense:

Hub -> Piggyback connector > Front light > Rear Light
    ......................................................>Sinewave

Also where is the best place to actually keep the sinewave?

  • That’s what I have.

I wired the Sinewave with banana connectors and it lives in my top tube bag. Banana connectors means I can remove it with the bag and leave the wiring through the fork leg alone

  • What's the forum recommended dynamo USB charger?

  • A friend has asked me for some dynamo advice so I'm outsourcing it to the forum. She wants a dynamo + lights set up on a relative budget. Anything anyone would suggest? Have thought about a Spa cycles SP-PD8 disc wheel and then sourcing lights separately.

When I bought mine it was pre-Brexit and getting stuff from EU/DE was so cheap compared to what I can find online.

  • Ta but need disc not rim unfortunately

  • Sinewave revolution; can get you a touch off RRP if you message me

  • Don’t skimp on the hub, buy SP or SON; the lights are far easier / cheaper to upgrade or add later

  • They have one of them too!

  • are there any wheelbuilders out there who are part of the c2w scheme? I want a set of dynamo wheels for my commute...
