• Really excited to see how this is going to turn out. What tyres and bars and stuff??

  • So I might get rid of the alfine and build some other wheels up. Got a dynamo on the way.

Tyres... I have some Mezcals or some tan wall Specialized ones. Probs an On One OG bar, layback thomson post, have an old shorter STX crankset that's more suited to my crumbling knees

  • still waiting for pedals but I'll spare the forum another round of that game

  • Its amazing what a nice paint job and good selection of budget parts can do to a bike!!

    Well done.

  • it'll be up on the classifieds at some point, if anyone fancies it...

  • Thankyou, tried my best to keep it sensible.

    Stuff is expensive.

  • Very lovely

  • That color and the understated build are perfect. It's way more difficult to build an elegant bike on a budget imo so kudos!

  • wow!! drooling!! well done!

  • I am, in my heart, a minimalist

  • That is stunning!
If I wasn't moving to a smaller house I'd be well up for rehoming that.

  • Looks fantastic

  • I've said it before, but to reiterate that is an absolute beauty.

  • Love love love the colour on the Rockhopper. Bar id? Nitto something?

  • Thanks - came out alright.
    Yeah, it's a Heron bar

  • It's a beaut! out of interest what shifter is that?

  • Looks like a SunRace SLM96/M90 Thumbshifter.
They come in both 8 and 9 speed. They're quite nice, if you mind the the tension of the set screw.

  • Ah yeah that's the one, ta!

  • Yeah it seems nicely made enough for the £.

  • next project - having recently started commuting again pretty regularly and having a couple of close shaves, as well as one episode of 'binning it' on the best bike, I can for probably the first time in my life justify having a commuter/lock up bike.

All the usual caveats - lockable, unlovable, looks a bit rubbish, 700c, guards, but still enjoyable enough to be essentially the bike I'll probably end up riding the most.

That'll be a dawes galaxy then

This one is, I believe, a retrobike-user-baiting late 90's/early 00's example from their heyday, ie the time they ill-advisedly moved production to the fort factory in the czech republic, resplendent in a sort of credit-crunch-anticipating black and blue finish

  • First 'issue' is that it seems to be the only dawes galaxy in recorded history without a drilled fork crown. Where am I going to put a basket/rack for my weekly pootle to the bakery?? I panicked. So I drilled a hole in it
