Japanese clothes culture is way more sophisticated than the Chinese.
Some of the stuff in the Beijing malls were proper cringe worthy, can't say the same of those in Tokyo.

Have you seen that jacket? Are you part of a sophisticated Japanese biker gang you'd rather we didn't understand? If so no problem.

It's not that deep. I was in China for work a few years ago and there seemed to be a massive trend for black clothing with non-sensical English words / phrases in large fonts. Some quite comical
I guess it's the same as the use of kanji / hanzi characters in clothing / tattoos in the west.
