  • Was a strange game. I always thought Spain looked a liable to let in a goal but Germany lacked a real threat. Nice to see the group go down to the wire

  • Just seen the score ! Crazy

  • A big hello and love from the magnificent TS to the football thread. We were bonding over Hakim Zyeich and shite in the watch thread via the gram.
He has gone full native with soccer roos face paint 😆

  • Wild match. Hoping Cameroon win with a 4th and all the subs run back on again.

  • Point a piece is probably a fair result. Excellent game.

  • Vincent Aboubakar's goal.. wow

  • Ooh - say hi to the old bugger!

  • That was such a lovely finish. Outrageous

  • Vincent Aboubakar's goal.. wow

It was the finish of a man who thought he was offside.

  • Ha that's a great shout. Awww fuck it I'm off side anyway đŸ€Ș

  • Watching the highlights, I really like the Mitrovic goal. Defence at sixes and sevens but three or four sensible ‘percentage’ passes and he just drops back a bit to move himself away from the defenders and make an angle. Lot of time for that.

  • I've enjoyed your very brief protest. Strong move to admit to folding so soon, having previously called someone else out for their decision to watch with the quote “we stand for equality, unless it’s a tiny bit hard”

  • Great comeback from SK. Two excellent headers.

  • Absolute scenes

  • Another really good game that. SK manager lost his fucking head at the end there.

  • having previously called someone else out for their decision to watch with the quote “we stand for equality, unless it’s a tiny bit hard”

To be precise, I called out someone who called out the England team for not protesting to their standard “we stand for equality, unless it’s a tiny bit hard” was their quote. Got no problem with anyone watching it, just don't whinge that folks aren't protesting enough for you.

And yes, I'm fine admitting I miss watching football. Kings Lynn v Stevenage in the FA cup was fine but didn't quite cut the mustard. I'll still boycott for most of it, it's only on my conscience.

  • You did also argue rather forcefully that "I'd suggest any tournament for which 6000+ migrant workers died isn't worthy of having you watch it." - anyway, feel free to ignore me, I'm just trolling rather than working...

  • Well, I'm nothing if not a hypocrite. Point still stands, but I certainly underestimated how hard it would be not to watch football.

  • I was in the pub while the England/USA match was on - what I picked up by osmosis made it really easy not to want to watch football again ever.

  • It's possible to like football, and be an England fan, and still think that Qatar WC is utterly awful and so are a large number of England football fans. I just don't get the rabid fanaticism that is rampant within football. The financial entity club I vaguely follow is purely because it was the nearest one to where I grew up. If they were bought by the Saudi's or similar I'd have no problem stopping following them, binning the few shirts/shorts I have, and explaining to people why I've done it.

My level of Qatar boycotting is limited to not buying the Panini album (which I'd usually do with my daughter) and not buying any of the Qatar 2022 Adidas footballs (I usually get a few of the WC/Euro balls as we go through quite a few in a year playing 5-a-side).

But I'm quite happy sitting down and watching it on telly.

I'm not a huge fan of attending big football matches in person anyway. I prefer to watch from the comfort of a sofa or in a pub (ideally with beer in hand). I'll watch the #PORURU game tonight at my desk with a can of lager whilst also refining a presentation I've got to give tomorrow (internal thankfully).

(Also, I much prefer "playing" [or whatever you can call a bunch of 40/50 year olds shinning a ball around a small cage whilst wheezing heavily] football to watching it. But the days of playing 5 or 6 [sometimes 7] times a week are long gone.)

  • It was to their standard.

    The standard they set.

  • It's been every day all day for the last week or so. You've done well.
You can still object to fifa awarding it to Qatar and think fifa a bunch of pricks & still enjoy the football. If you doing a Beckham it might be a bit more of a problem.

  • Also might be looking for a regular friendly kick about in the new year are you kn London?
