Modern crank/BB performance differential (if it even exists) has next to no effect on results compared with all the gains to be had elsewhere
Elite teams (GB/France/Germany/Aus) have their own crankset programmes, some proprietary to their frames, so mainstream component manufacturers have no opportunity to "race on Sunday, sell on Monday"

Why do Campagnolo and Shimano not make modern track cranksets but still this old square taper/ octalink stuff? And why do people still use these on modern carbon track frames?
