  • Can anyone recommend a good DIY product for filling in these damp-inducing holes around my window?

  • Missus is in the market for one of those robot vacuum cleaners. I have my doubts, but she has her heart set on one. Is there one which is clearly better than the others? Which is easiest to use? I know some people on here have them, and with the Black Friday sales on, seems a good time to get one.

  • Probably exterior silicone sealant, surprised the window fitters didn't use some originally.

    I would use masking tape either side of the joint (not too close to joint otherwise you will get a ridge when you remove it) apply a thick bead and use a smoothing tool for a nice neat bead.

    I just looked at their own guide and ordered a ‘DD8L Zambezi’ for next-day.

  • Get some foam joint backer strip if it’s a big gap before sealing

  • I have an Eufy G30. Not quite as good as the iRobot one I had but much cheaper. Would recommend it.

  • I’ve just fixed the exact same problem on the front of my pebbledashed house, using the below sealant.

    Dried very quickly. Had to use three tubes as the gaps just eat it up.

  • £300 ooof! I suppose if she wants a decent one, she/we will have to pay up for one. But as you said significantly cheaper than the iRobot ones, even with them discounted for Black Friday..

  • Also have that Eufy. Paid 225 last May.
    My house is all old floorboards, so as long as I get any cables out the way then it does a good job of picking up dust and doesn't get stuck on much.
    When I'm feeling very lazy then I'll wander a room waving a Dewalt blower at ceilings and corners to blow the dust onto the floor just before setting off the vac.

  • Prices vary a lot. It's £190 at the moment at Costco https://www.costco.co.uk/Home-Kitchen/Eufy-RoboVac-G30-Verge-Robotic-Vacuum-Cleaner-T2252K11/p/6300630 and their online membership is only a tenner or so.

  • @mespilus recommended Soudal fix all. I tired it. Did the job.

    Fill the gap with backer or expanding foam if required - sealant laid on too thick will not cure.

    Sorted a very complex 3 products into 1 and porting a mortgage for us that we could not of got our heads round ourselves.

  • We have dated electrics in our new house which we’ll be sorting over the next year. I was looking in our meter cupboard last night to try to work out a few things and spotted this transformer feeding the cream box underneath and can’t work out what it is. Any ideas?

  • Why are people so sneaky?
    Seller agreed to pay for 2 parts of upcoming scheduled works on the flat we are buying (one part has just been done, other smaller part will start soon)
    Normally a retention is held back to cover the work, once the bill is known it’s paid with the money and the remainder is then given to the seller. all funds are held by the buyers solicitor, this is the normal way of doing things.

    They have just proposed that their solicitor withholds the money (which isn’t enough to cover the likely final bill) and then pays it to us once we get the bill with any shortfall made up by us.

    Don’t think so mate, here’s the conditions of offer where it clearly states you are paying for all the work...
    Played it with a straight bat to mid on where it kissed the rope for 4 runs, expecting a bouncer next which i will politely leave...

    You say sneaky, they might think they are protecting their interests. From their POV, they probably can't entertain a situation where their liabilities are unlimited, for work that they won't ever enjoy any benefit from.

    (We were actually on the other side of this, and went down the route you describe, for the above reason, and yes the buyer bitched about it but we just asked if they wanted the place or not. I should probably follow up with the solicitor to ask what the bill was in the end).

    No - or at least in general the retention should be governed by someone who acts in the seller's interest.
