  • I can hear Aime Leon Dore calling up the lawyers from here

  • Hand pockets in a jack-shirt are one of my favourite things. They appear to take the weight of phone and keys better than trouser pockets.

  • Same here. I actually bought it twice - first one the cuff ripped almost immediately. Noticed it had been reduced even further on TKMaxx so bought another and returned the first. a couple of the button holes have come loose on that which I'll get around to fixing at some point. Bad choice of fabric / thread I think, or needed some reinforcement.

Folk stuff seems hit and miss for me, another 'shacket' I have has been great, but I hate the chinos I have, button fly constantly coming undone.

Speaking of which, who makes not-too-pricey cords/chinos? I need a break from jeans occasionally. Bought some Uniclo cords but they had silly pockets, maybe that some others are alright.

  • No idea re the TK stuff I'm afraid...

  • How do the folk shirts size? I tend to be on the smaller side of M (3) and the larger size of S (2)

  • The motorbike (and camper van) are necessary because of illness. I won't detail my medical history here, but you can discover it if you sniff around in other threads.

  • I'm usually a medium in most things, but went for a large with this folk shirt after trying both sizes - so perhaps err on the bigger size.

  • where should i look for a classic shaped woman’s puffer jacket second hand and what brands should i look out for beyond north face etc? thank you

  • Ebay tends to have lots of this kind of thing. Alternatives are Vinted, Preloved and Facebook Marketplace. Also Grailed and Farfetch and Vestiaire, though they have a bit more emphasis on upscale stuff.

Ebay is usually very reliable, because of seller ratings and ease of return/refund when something is not as described. But prices are usually a bit higher because sellers have to pay high fees.

  • thank you! i have to say the vinted ads make me feel a bit old!

  • Good luck!

If you search on ebay for items from Continental Europe you'll see items from Ukraine, some very posh. Many nice wardrobes being cleared out over there.

There are some very high status brands in puffer jackets...Moncler, Canada Goose etc. You can see them if you sort your ebay results from high price to low. It's a bit of a minefield if buying for a woman. Rather you than me.

  • varies a bit, one I have is more jacket and as such designed a bit roomier. I think mine are all 3 and pretty good where I usually go M or maybe a L

  • I forgot to mention that puffer jackets are counterfeited. I think there are fake Moncler and Canada Goose ones, but I'm not an expert. Some of the sellers on less regulated sites, e.g. Facebook Marketplace, are probably pushing fakes.

To find out which ones the counterfeiters are producing you could dive into reddit.com/r/FashionReps. Or dhgate.com, a Chinese site where fakes are sold fairly openly. Often they blur the logo on the listing but send you an unblurred photo if you message them.

There are also fake clothes/luxury goods dealers (e.g. finerlabels dot net) with links on the fake watch dealers' sites (e.g. trustytimewatch88 dot io). The trustworthy watch dealers are listed at the fake watch forums, e.g. rwg.bz and forum.replica-watch.info.

Alibaba/aliexpress try hard not to list fakes any more, because the owner, Jack Ma, is such a big cheese that he needs to be in with the Party. The Party is getting hotter and hotter about counterfeiting. There are fake watchmakers languishing in prison. It seems they can't bribe their way out. But jobs in the fake watch workshops are highly sought after, despite the risk. So it's probably not safe to assume that pay and conditions in these illegal enterprises are like the ones which caused the Foxconn suicides.

  • omg, thank for the info

  • you missed a spot

  • Not sure what you mean by classic shape puffer but if you’re after a decent down jacket I’d rank RAB well above North Face.

    @sohi #bringbackrep

  • Probably overkill for your q! But I thought I'd leave it there for ppl generally

  • This. ^ @tmevans. rab are brilliant. I love the rab neutrino jacket and I think that's the classic puffa jkt shape. Big mitchalin man type.

  • I would never buy a canada goose from ebay unless it was a seller with loads of feedback selling other items and it was obvious it was their jacket and had all the tags/labels and the hologram thing.

that said climate change means you are unlikely to wear it often, i probably only wear mine 3-10 days a year and some warm/wet winters not at all.
makes me laugh when i see people wearing them when it’s 10° not because it’s cold but because they want to be seen wearing it.

  • Oxfam online store has good stuff

  • Yep haven't worn mine in a year and a half. I want the cold weather to wear it as it so toasty

  • If keeping warm is your thing, another excellent non-fashion puffa style
jacket manufacturer is PhD. Often found second hand on outdoor forums, eBay etc.

  • on the subject of down and sustainabilty/fast fashion i have a RAB sheffield made puffa bought in 1995 which while it’s retired from wear i haven’t thrown out as i want to either donate or recycle it.
Cost a fortune back then, about £140!
