Interesting one with a friend today. A few cuts and bruises sustained, but otherwise fine.

Cars waiting in a queue on a standard two lane road. Coming from further back, it's not clear why the cars had stopped. My friend filtered on the right hand side of the stopped cars. Not advisable, obviously. He left himself very little room. He is either in the very small gap between the cars and the white lines or on the other side of the road.
It turns out the traffic had stopped because the car at the front was turning right. Unclear as to whether they were indicating.
Car turns right, my friend filtering, goes over the bonnet. Both him and driver were very shaken, but otherwise ok.
It isn't clear, to me, who is at fault in this scenario. I think the driver should have check mirrors, but also, I don't think my friend should have been filtering on the right hand side of traffic on a two lane road. If driver had checked mirrors, it is possible that my friend was going fast and the he wasn't in the drivers mirrors and appeared out of nowhere. It's a downhill on a corner.
What do you all think?

It’s fine to filter on the RHS, actually advisable over filtering on the LHS most of the time, as you are more visible to drivers. Why do you think motorbikes almost always filter on the right? It’s safer.

Hard to apportion ‘blame’ without more info. Could just be bad luck

Not sure on speed. It's a slight downhill part of the road, but assuming it was within speed limit.

Yes, as said above, it’s the safer place to be.

That said, whenever I’m filtering on the rhs of stationary traffic I ride at a speed to react to anything unexpected. A person stepping out from between cars to cross the road without looking, a car door opening, a car not indicating to make a right turn/sudden u turn etc

Should not be overtaking at a junction

Drivers not at the front of the queue and not near a junction often turn right with no warning - to U-turn, or the classic speed along in the wrong lane to turn right a bit further on. Filtering in the middle of the road is fine but do it at a speed to take such manoeuvres into account.

The speed limit doesn’t apply to bicycles - but that said you should ride at an appropriate speed after doing risk assessment on the road ahead. Filtering alongside stationary traffic and going at the speed limit is almost definitely not going to be safe. You don’t give yourself time to react as described above.

Highway Code

stay in your lane if traffic is moving slowly in queues. If the queue on your right is moving more slowly than you are, you may pass on the left. Cyclists may pass slower moving or stationary traffic on their right or left and should proceed with caution as the driver may not be able to see you. Be careful about doing so, particularly on the approach to junctions, and especially when deciding whether it is safe to pass lorries or other large vehicles.

DO NOT overtake where you might come into conflict with other road users. For example
approaching or at a road junction on either side of the road

Hit by a random U turner, their fault, collision with a right turning vehicle at a right turn not so much, obviously they should check right mirrors just before turning but no one does and it's not a good idea to try and overtake on the right at a right turning junction.

No action has/was taken. I think both parties accepted responsibility and were lucky not more damage was done.
I was interested to see who would have been at fault, if anyone.

Think it’s a case by case basis rather than a blanket one person blame. Driver should have checked mirrors, cyclist probably shouldn’t be flying along RHS toward a junction.
I actually got knocked off my motorbike and the bike written off in the same scenario except as Hoefla mentioned, driver pulled out way before junction to speed along the wrong side of the road to avoid waiting and hit me filtering

Witnessed rider vs car after a car turned right through a gap in the traffic and across the cycle lane into kwik fit / Aldi turning on Lea Bridge Road. On my way home this eve just before 18:00.

It looked like quite a knock so I was relieved to find the rider on his feet and saying he was fine. He had a some grazes but insisted he was ok.

I was hit at that spot almost two years to the day under similar circumstances. I crashed onto the bonnet, slid up the windshield over the passenger-side wing mirror and landed on my feet much to the shock and amazement of bystanders. Upon realising that I was ok, the driver got out and wanted to give me a hug, which I politely declined, mid-covid. #csb

That turn-in is a death trap for cyclists in evening rush hour.

Yeah, those turnings are dodgy.

Sometimes it seems safer to ride in the road.

Minor incident

front wheel fell down an uncovered drain hole (just outside the bike park!) this eve outside new cross sainsburys, flipped me over the front n bashed my knee etc

anyone had experience trying to claim compensation for something like this? hard to tell real damage but knee does feel pretty bust up

reported it to the store, who are apparently going to raise it with the owners of the car park
