I think one of the first things he’ll focus on is sorting out the Twitter ad platform. It sucks and one of the main reasons why their ad revenue has grown so slowly. Facebook makes around 2.5 x per user of Twitter in the states. They should be able to double their ad revenue.

Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints.

No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes.

How many would they hope to sell?

Back of envelope time, but there can't be 10,000,000's of Twitter users who would subscribe. Even if there were that would still be in the $100m's revenue per year - I'm no accountant but that doesn't really dent the $1bn annual debt that Musk has rung up that I've read about.

It was $8/mo.

So 10mm users would be just shy of $1bn/year.

But, yeah, little chance of that happening even before the recent fuckups.

I read elsewhere that there were only ~2300 unique advertisers on Twitter even before all of this shit kicked off. FB have >3M unique advertisers so my guess is this opportunity is what Musk saw in Twitter (if it wasn't just an impulse "because I can" purchase.)

(I wouldn't know about Twitter adverts, the client I use shows its own adverts at the bottom of the screen, that don't get in the way, and I've never seen a promoted tweet or had tweets display in anything other than chronological order.)

I think technology is ripe for a middle ground between batshit-insane-mega-capitalist-Unicorns and donation-or-patreon-funded-OSS.

Imagine Twitter run as a not-for-profit with minimal advertising, a sensible sized workforce that will never make it big with options but will have decent benefits and work culture, etc and a genuine goal of removing hate-speech and misinformation.

Musk said the other day he wants 50% of revenue to come from subs, so am sure someone can work that backwards to how many sub's he needs at $8 a month

I can imagine sub prices being tiered based on some crude metric such as number of followers.

(There may need to be exceptions that are granted for people with a big number of followers but no links to revenue. Obviously that's all subjective and contentious.)
